Women in Power: Meet Kuwait’s Farah Bishara AKA DJ Bonita!

We love a woman in power! Kuwaiti based DJ, Farah Bishara started pursuing her passion for mixing hip-hop tracks for a living around 6 years ago. When she first stepped foot on the scene “People didn’t understand why a Kuwaiti woman was mixing hip-hop for a living, and it often made me second-guess my career choice” she says, but that didn’t stop her! Aware of the stereotypes and boundaries that may follow women working in the music industry, DJ Bonita states “it’s possible to make it” and isn’t afraid to say it out loud.

Farah has now built a strong reputation for herself and her style, known for spinning 90’s hip hop sets – and to make her even more kick ass, she does this on vinyl! What we find even more empowering about Bishara, is that she is also the founder of Kuwait’s first vinyl record store “Vinyl Destination”.

🎛 record of the week: Ma$e’s “Harlem World” 💰💎😎 taking you back to the shiny suit era with this one! this album is the first album i bought with my own money. i remember 10 year-old me walking into Video Club with my 5 KD and the clerk asking me many times “are you sure this is what you want?”. why wouldn’t i have been sure? 💙 showing versatility within Bad Boy’s lineup and a complete style switch from @rsvpmase’s previous rap group, his debut album epitomized every late 90’s hip-hop album: jiggy beats, lyrics oozing with wit and charm, and hilarious skits. what’s your favorite track on this album? “Lookin At Me” is my forever-jam! (S/O to @pharrell!) P.S. can we bring bandanas back?
