1990s-2010s: Playdough VS. Kinetic Sand VS. Slime

Trends – they come, they go, and sometimes they last for decades. Yes, Playdough, Kinetic Sand, and Slime all – technically – do the same thing, but which one’s the best? if you grew up in the 90s, you definitely stand by playdough being your favorite crafty thing to play with, the 2000s kids had the revolutionary sand, and the 2010s kids – and adults – turned to slime! We think all are pretty cool – but keep reading to learn a little more about them.

Playdough

Yes, we absolutely loved playdough growing up in the 90s, but did you know that the product was first manufactured in the 1930s? Play dough was initially manufactured in the United states as a wallpaper cleaner before it became a modeling compound for arts and crafts projects at home. We could do all kinds of things with playdough from modeling characters to pretending to bake and more and for 90s kids – it will live on forever.

Kinetic Sand

Post the 90s playdough era, another new molding craft came to light – kinetic sand. It was revolutionary! It’s an unusual substance in that its viscosity increases under stress. You can form it into fun shapes and slice it. However, unlike playdough, it’s not the cheapest thing to buy. Kinetic Sand is regular sand, but instead of being coated in water – like wet sand – It is coated with Silicone Oil so that it will never dry out. How cool is that?

Slime

If you haven’t heard of slime, you must have been living under a rock for the past decade. Slime is everywhere – toy stores, markets, and of course, the Internet. Not only can you make slime out of basic household ingredients, but you can make it in many different ways. Slime is a major trend on the internet till this day – from ASMR videos, to satisfying videos, to people making slime to sell it – we definitely think slime got the most popularity over the years. Have you ever tried making it?
