10 Fun Facts About Bohemian Rhapsody The Movie

One of my favorite movies from not only 2019 but probably of all time has to be Bohemian Rhapsody. I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen not once, but twice in the past month and have since found myself to become the ultimate Queen fan. Thanks to this movie, we have seen a HUGE revival in Queen and Freddy Mercurys story, and I am absolutely loving it.

With a fab cast – including Rami Malek, Egyptian actor who was recently awarded a Golden Globe for his performance as Mr. Freddy Mercury himself – this movie has made it to the top of the charts. Full of music, performance, and some amazing acting this movie tells the epic story of how Queen came together and changed Rock and Roll forever. The movie is said to be so authentic thanks to the involvement of Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor – who were very involved in making sure the movie was as close as it could be to the real story. Check out these 10 fun facts that we have rounded up about Bohemian Rhapsody – the movie.

1. The Wembley Stadium

The movie crew decided to build a complete replica of the Wembley Stadium Live Aid Concert on an airfield in London – which took months and months of planning. In fact, the director of the Live Aid concert back in 1985 was present during the shooting of the movie in order to make sure that it was as close as it could be to the original concert.

 2. Gold Teeth

Rami Malek had to get used to his Freddy Mercury teeth for quite some time before they actually became comfortable and natural looking. He mentions that it was hard to talk, sing and also kiss in them but eventually he felt weird without them! Once the movie was done shooting, Rami took the false teeth and got them cast in gold.

3. The Love of His Life

In the movie, Freddy meets Mary Austin as is instantly intrigued by her and soon peruses her by going over to Biba where she works to see her. However, in real life, apparently it took Mercury over six months to actually ask her out.

4. A True Love Affair

Lucy Boynton and Rami Malek not only played onscreen lovers as Mary and Freddy but actually are a real couple. The love birds met on set and have been dating since April of 2018.

5. A Triple Threat

Rami Malek underwent intense vocal training during the making of the movie to be able to sing for some scenes. The movie soundtrack is composed of Rami, Marc Martel (who eerily sounds so close to Freddy) and the original Freddy Mercury.

6. Those Freddy Moves

Rami Malek worked very closely with a Movement Coach in order to prep for the movie. The reason behind this? Freddy himself never actually choreographed any of his moves for Queens concerts, but once onstage would move around the stage naturally and was extremely spontaneous. Rami wanted to replicate this so that it wouldn’t look like it was too forced for the movie.

7. Vintage Threads

The movie was filled with costumes that totally represented the 70’s and 80’s to the T. In fact, some of the clothing items were actually genuinely worn by Queen. Brian May, the lead guitarist of Queen was actually so particular about his representation during the movie (played by actor Gwilym Lee) that he had the costume stylist take a bunch of outfits from his own personal closet for Gwilym to wear.

8. One Big Happy Family

Rami Malek has now become great friends with not only Brian May and Roger Taylor but also became friendly with Freddys sister Kashmira Cooke. During the 2019 Golden Globes, Rami was accompanied by both Brian and Roger who cheered him on as he was awarded Best Actor in a Motion Picture.

9. Meow Meow

Freddy Mercury was really obsessed with cats. During the movie this becomes quite apparent when Freddy moves into a huge house and has a room dedicated to each of his feline friends. In real life Freddy would also regularly call Mary and ask her to hold up the phone to his 2 cats Tom and Jerry so that he could talk to them.

10. You’re Fired

The original director of the movie Bryan Singer was fired during the making of Bohemian Rhapsody. He got into several disagreements with some of the cast as well as the original members of Queen – Brian and Roger. The rest of the movie was directed by Dexter Fletcher.
