Spotlight On: Heron Preston

Heron Preston first caught on my eye when wanting to expand my wardrobe with trendy tee’s. Spotted on Kendall Jenner, it slipped into my saved folder on Instagram and made a second appearance after Hailey Baldwin was papped for the first time post Justin Bieber engagement rumors. Sporting their Resort ’19 crop denim jacket and matching skirt, Miss Baldwin (or should I say Bieber?) was seen only several days later in their multicolored hooded jacket. Now, while I don’t usually buy into celebrity dressing, I knew there had to be more to the brand.

Who is Heron Preston?

After digging a little deeper, I learned the San Francisco-born designer, DJ, and artist, Heron Preston studied at Parsons School of Design in New York before co-founding, alongside Off-White’s Virgil Abloh, streetwear collective brand Been Trill. Making his way back into the market with the unveiling of his ‘NASCAR’ t-shirt, mocking historical trademarks into an over-branded, bootleg-style visual feast, Preston’s designs play on the value and true meaning of ‘authenticity’.

Following an eye-opening encounter with the Mediterranean ocean, Preston was exposed to the extent at which the earth is being damaged with pollution, much of which is propelled by the fashion industry. Compelled at creating a collection that merged womenswear and drew awareness to global environmental issue, Heron Preston produced a sustainable streetwear collection titled “UNIFORM”, in collaboration with New York’s Department of Sanitation.

Launched in 2017, the brand oozes cool and speaks this I can’t sit with you attitude while still projecting Preston’s ideologies, he produces a reference-rich collection, immersed in internet, youth, and counterfeit culture.

Worn by all your favorite influencers

Seen on cool girls, Amina Muaddi, Sabrina Albarello, Nianga Niang, Bella Hadid – Preston has a cult status aesthetic merging graphics and utilitarian designs into oversized tee’s, sweatpants and outerwear. His SS’19 menswear collection named “Public Figure” plays on influencer cults and the explosion of influencer culture. Infused with industrial components, contrasting color blocks, subtle prints and some sights of skins, the collection stays true to his signature workwear-inspired, as ready-to-wear, aesthetic.
