Arabic Sweets with a Twist

It’s Ramadan which means, family gatherings, great food, and, of course, desserts! We love Ramadan because we get to enjoy all of our favorite Arabic treats and sweets – from kunafa, to baklawa – but, why not add a twist this time around? Add a little ice cream or Nutella to your favorite Arabic confectionaries and enter into a whole new world of tastes. Follow this list for some inspiration to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Kunafa with Nutella

Kunafa – everyone’s all-time favorite Arabic sweet. We love the combination of the cheesy, crunchy goodness that is kunafa, with the savory taste of pistachio to top it off, but why not switch the cheese out for something else – Nutella! Turn this mix of sugary and savory into an all sweet dessert by adding Nutella to the center and replacing the pistachios with strawberries. This is a twist you don’t want to miss out on!

Ashta with Cotton Candy

The next dessert we love switching up is Ashta – clotted cream prepared with rose water and orange blossom water. Ashta is used as a filler in desserts such as kunafa, Atayif, and many others, but it can also be eaten on its own. A great way to sweeten this dessert up is by topping it onto Arabic cotton candy! Try it out yourself.

Qatayef with Jam

Qatayef, commonly called ‘Atayef’ are the traditional pastries that are served during Ramadan. Atayef is considered a dessert, not a breakfast food, though they really resemble pancakes! in Middle Eastern cultures, you can get them made with cheese, nuts, or clotted crème, but what a lot of people don’t know is that cream cheese tastes great with jam! Let us know what you think.

Baklawa with Ice Cream

Baklawa is probably one of the most recognized Middle Eastern desserts of all time! Dating all the way back to the cuisine of the Byzantine empire, the sweet has made its way from Turkey to the Levant, the Gulf, and today it is enjoyed internationally. This puff-pastry like dessert is made with cheese and topped with pistachios, but why not add some more toppings? Like ice cream! We love this dessert and hope you all enjoy it with a twist.
