5 Beaches to Visit in China

When you think of China, the first thing that comes to mind likely isn’t the beaches. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some pristine and gorgeous beaches just waiting for you to come and soak up some surf and rays. China has plenty of coastlines to explore and some dazzling beaches worthy of hardcore lounging! Next time you’re in China, don’t forget to put at least one of these gorgeous locals on your itinerary!

Wuzhizhou Island

Known as the “Maldives of China”, this island in Haitang Bay is located in a tropical marine zone. It is the first commercial diving location in China and boasts a wide variety of marine life, protected coral reefs, and visibility up to 90 feet down. There is also decent surfing to be had as well as sailing and canoeing. You might want to check out other points on interest on the island like the Life Well, Sunrise Rock, the Goddess Matsu Temple, and the Lover’s Bridge.  If you do wish to dive, many suggest that you do so early as spots tend to fill up quickly. Temperatures stay warm year round and the white sand beaches are soft, just begging you to take a stroll along these crystal waters!

Yalong Bay

Called “The Oriental Hawaii”, this 7 kilometre long crescent-shaped stunning beach surrounded by lush flora is located in Sanya on Hainan Island. A tip here is to stay at one of the many gorgeous hotels so that you can take advantage of their private beaches as sometimes the public beaches can get crowded quickly. With an average temperature of 23 degrees Celcius in January, you can only make up so many excuses as to why you are not already there!

Gulangyu Island

This pedestrian-only island is known for its eclectic mix of world architecture, historical sites, the fabled 600 pianos on the island, and of course its beaches. Located in the Fujian Province and accessible via ferry, it is widely regarded as a place to relax, enjoy the beauty all around you, and take life at a slower pace.  There are many beaches available here, all with gentle surf and fine soft sand. That’s music to our ears!

Tianya Haijiao

Considered to be the southernmost tip of China, this area in Sanya is lauded as one of the most romantic beaches in all of China. Many recently wed Chinese couples seek out the destination because of a bit of old Chinese literature that says: “I will follow you to Tianya Haijiao”, which is considered to mean that the couple will last forever. Besides the romantic vibes, the beach is also famous for its large rock formations. This place is just an Instagram picture waiting to happen.

Putuoshan Island

About 150 km south of Shanghai, you will happen upon what locals call “the purest land in the world”. Offering up stunning beaches, pristine nature, and Putuo Mountain, which is one of the Four Sacred Mountains of Chinese Buddhism, it is easy to see how it earned this title. Though beaches abound on this island, the most famous are Thousand Step Beach and Hundred Step Beach.
