An Artist a Day: Samara

Welcome back to our daily series on The Modern East, ‘An Artist a Day’. With art at the forefront of the world’s development, we have decided to showcase the local and international artistic talent in our community for the next month. From painters to photographers, musicians, and more, this series features artists that you do not want to miss out on!

Samara

For today’s Artist of the day, we would like to present Samara, a 21-year-old university student majoring in music. Samara’s passion for music began as far back as she can remember.  As a child, Samara would stand on the bed, and give her parents, or as she calls them – her day one supporters – no other option but to sit down as she’d perform for them.

Although music isn’t something that runs in her family, she has always been inclined towards it. Not only does Samara sing, but she is also a songwriter, and wrote her first-ever song when she was only 14 years old. Not so long after that, she began to post her original music on Soundcloud and has been writing ever since!

Samara’s Inspiration

Growing up, Samara says she listened to artists like Amy Winehouse and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Something Samara has been working on as a singer is to truly connect with songs, hence her admiration of musicians whose music told stories and oozed emotion. Although, she had struggled to do so while singing covers of songs, so what better way to connect with lyrics than to write her own – right?

Samara is a self-proclaimed night-owl and even says she can only ever write her music when everyone else is asleep. As her mind wanders, and memories playback in her head contemplating scenarios that she wished would have happened – Samara puts her thoughts into words and turns it into the art of songwriting.

“One moment it represents me, the next it’s my therapy,” Samara says referring to her music. Samara believes that music is a form of self-expression and that no taste in music is wrong, because we all connect to a music so differently, yet it is one of the things that universally unite us.

Samara is a representation of music, as well as her belief in the art. With her heart poured into each and every song – her EP, ‘The Art of Moving on,’ as well as her new single ‘Moonlight’ is now out there for everyone to listen to, and we think you should too!

“The Art of Moving On”

“Never Again”

Samara actually wrote the first version of ‘Never Again‘ back in 2018, but then decided to rework it and put it on her EP ‘The Art of Moving On’. Samara says that this particular song is one that hits close to home, even while listening back on it today. Representing immediate thoughts after the end of a relationship, her listeners can really connect to this one.

“Blue”

‘The Art of Moving On’ is Samara’s take on the aftermath of a beautiful relationship. “Blue” is the final track on the EP, which she has intended to be her last hurrah! This track has deep value to Samara as she says after she wrote it, recorded it, and listened to it, she truly knew that it was time to turn over a new leaf.

 “Moonlight”

Moonlight is Samara’s personal favorite and newest single. In the past, Samara has leaned towards slower music and with Moonlight it is evident that she has tested out the waters and branched past her perceived capabilities. This song revolves around the undeniable attraction one can have towards somebody – something we all can relate to at some point in our lives.
