History Podcasts You Need to Listen To

It doesn’t matter whether you’re working at home, traveling, going to sleep, whatever, podcasts are the best way to make that time go by a bit quicker. If you’re like me, then this is a perfect opportunity to nerd out and learn more about history than you ever did at school! I’m clearly not the only one, there are literally thousands of different history podcasts out there; so many that a new explorer in the podcast world might have no idea where to start. If that’s you then don’t worry, here are my favorite history podcasts to get you started:

You’re Dead to Me

A podcast built around the premise that you probably didn’t listen to everything in history class. From the writers of Horrible Histories (if you haven’t seen HH, get to YouTube NOW!) comes You’re Dead To Me, where renowned history experts explain particular parts of history to a comedian who will try to make comedy from what they hear. It’s easy and light; perfect for when you just want to chill and be entertained by your history.

In Our Time History

If you want to go, full nerd, In Our Time History is a must. From the BBC radio’s long-running series, In Our Time History takes a deep DEEP dive into historical events, with the help of a panel of experts (definitely no comedians here). In Our Time is not for the faint of heart (or the easily bored), but if accuracy and depth are your things, there’s no better place to listen. If you’re new, I would recommend their recent episode “Cave Art”.

Ridiculous History

If you need a break from the heavier In Our Time podcast, Ridiculous history has got you covered. Batting for the ‘history is fun’ team, Ridiculous History explores the more light-hearted events from our past including “That Time the US was Terrified of Tomatoes” and “Vitamin Donuts were a Real Thing”. Managing to perfect balance a comedic take on history with solid research and delivery, Ridiculous History is a must for anyone who loves podcasts and learning!

Footnoting History

Another deep dive style podcast, Footnoting History is a long-running, bi-weekly exploration into the more overlooked parts of history. There is a broad range of topics and periods covered so there’s sure to be something that you’ll love. All the presenters on this podcast have graduate-level degrees in history and present from their solid research on the topics covered. I can’t guarantee you’ll find every topic interesting, but I can guarantee you’ll learn something new!
