You know what they say about reading – those who read, live a thousand lives! In this feature, we are going over our favorite best-selling books of all time from each genre. If you haven’t read these books before, you are missing out and have no excuse! From apps, to audiobooks, and of course, the classic hard copy – you can find these bestsellers anywhere and they are all worth the read.

Fantasy

Harry Potter by J.K Rowling

Did you really think we would start this list off with none-other than J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter Series? Harry Potter is one of, if not, the best fantasy novel series of all time with one of the world’s largest fan-bases. Join Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger on their mystical adventure to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where they battle Lord Voldemort on his mission of becoming immortal. This is the classic you do not want to miss out on!

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien

Another all-time fantasy classic is the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R Tolkien. Fun Fact: The Hobbit – also by Tolkien – is the book leading up to this series! A young hobbit, Frodo, who has found the One Ring that belongs to the Dark Lord Sauron, begins his journey with eight companions to Mount Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed. Will they get there?

The Shining by Stephen King

Can we even mention anything else before we talk about Stephen King? Absolutely not. The Shining is one of King’s all-time classics. Jack and his family move into an isolated hotel with a violent past. Living in seclusion, Jack begins to lose his sanity and results to REDRUM – if you know, you know.

We’ve all seen the movies, but have you read the book? You know what they say – the book is always better! IT, another best-seller by Stephen King, follows the experiences of seven children as they are terrorized by an evil entity that exploits the fears of its victims to disguise itself while hunting its prey. Does your fear of clowns make sense now?

Mystery

The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler

We are throwing it all the way back to the 1930’s for this classic – almost a century ago – but, it’s that good! The Big Sleep is a hardboiled crime novel by Raymond Chandler, the first to feature the detective Philip Marlowe – if you’re a book worm and love mystery, you’ve heard of him. The novel lives on till today and has even been adapted into a film – twice!

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

The Notebook by Nicholas sparks is the romance novel that will pull on your heart strings. Fun fact: This was Sparks’ first published novel. The novel opens with Noah Calhoun, an old man, reading to a woman in a nursing home. The story he tells her is about a young couple in love – but, what happens at the end of this book will bring you to tears.

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Yes, another cancer story. But, this 2004 novel written by Jodi Picoult tells it immaculately. My Sister’s keeper is the story about thirteen-year-old Anna Fitzgerald, who sues her parents for medical emancipation when she discovers she was supposed to donate a kidney to her elder sister Kate, who is gradually dying from acute leukemia. This one’s definitely a tearjerker!

Classics

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Can we have some more please? Yes, you can with this all-time classic! Follow the story of Oliver, a young British orphan, in his attempt to escape the orphanage to find himself amongst a clan of pick-pocketers lead by an elderly criminal. Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal of criminals, and for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

You must have read this in your literature class at some point in your school years, but if you haven’t, it’s time to pick up this book! To Kill a Mockingbird, the award-winning novel by Harper Lee, is told through the eyes of Scout Finch. Though the novel covers these intense topics that we see in the modern day, it is still recognized for its warmth and humor.

Don’t try to deny it – we all tested out our telekinesis skills after this one! Matilda is the story of a little girl with a horrible upbringing, both at home and school – until, of course, she meets Ms. Honey and becomes her prodigy. Through her intelligence and skills, Matilda then realizes she has telekinetic powers – meaning, she can move things using her mind – and she definitely uses it to her advantage!
