C.S. Lewis once said, “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” Same, Mr. Lewis. Same. First learning to read was a magical thing. While we will always cherish the bedtime stories and quiet nights spent warm under our covers, listening to the comforting sound of our parents’ voices as they read us to sleep, finally being able to decipher the words in those books for ourselves was incredible and liberating. Suddenly, entire worlds and mythos were at our fingertips as soon as we cracked a cover. We would get to discover stories that would make us laugh and cry, stories that would awe and inspire, old favorites and new staples, knowledge and imagination. Nowadays, some of us still prefer the smell of a well-loved book, the crinkling sound a page makes when we turn it. Others love the soft glow of their kindle, the light weight of it in their hand as eyes dance across the lines that transport them somewhere….other. With a name that shows a little love to the man who invented the printing press, Project Gutenberg has over 58,000 free eBooks for you to peruse. You can download them to your computer, phone, or Kindle, or simply read them right from your browser. Here you’ll find the classics, and you’ll find A LOT of them. If you’re interested in maybe discovering a new up and coming author, or even trying your hand at writing yourself, you should definitely give this site a look. The site calls itself a “social storytelling platform”, and after a brief and painless sign up, you can either start reading or start writing. There are over 20 languages supported on this site, and it is easy to browse books you might want to potentially put on your “to-read” list by using the “discover” drop down menu and surfing the available genres. You can always save them and get a head start when traveling, start practicing reading new languages.

This sister site to Internet Archive also features a wide array of reading material. Some are available to instantly read, while other, more contemporary titles can be “borrowed”. To borrow, simply sign up for an account and chose the way you wish to read. You can do so right in browser, though other formats may take Adobe or another ebook software. It’s all very quick and easy and you’ll be basking in new literary goodness in no time!
