#90’sNostalgia: 5 Movies That Shaped Us

1. Clueless

Anyone who’s ever seen this movie knows it’s an absolute classic in the teen-movie world. Clueless was to 90’s movies what Mean Girls was for the 00’s, only better. It’s the now classic story of the popular girl who befriends an ‘outcast’ and gives her a makeover to make her cool. We’ve seen it before but Clueless was the OG of this story-line – and the characters are just endearing. One weird part of this story though, will always be that Josh and Cher used to be step-siblings but somehow emerged as love interests…I know they’re not technically related, but it still seems kinda wrong!

2. 10 Things I Hate About You

Always a legend – long before Heath Ledger played the Joker, he was bad-boy Patrick in the almost poetic 10 Things I Hate About You. A turbulent love story set in a high-school setting, 10 Things was a movie we could all relate to during our teen years. I’m pretty sure it’s also responsible for my attraction (sorry mom!) to bad boys! This was a 90’s movie truly representative of its time and the fashion and pure abandon it displays will surely make you want to go back to a much simpler era.

3. The Truman Show

Full disclosure, I spent around 2 weeks convinced I was living in my very own Truman Show after watching this 90’s movie! When you think about it, this movie was way ahead of its time (even if it came almost 50 years after the Philip K. Dick book, ‘Time Out of Joint’, from which it heavily ‘borrowed’ – ed), based on a combination of reality TV and the ‘Big Brother is always watching’ trope, it gave us a glimpse into what surveillance, technology, and the hunger for entertainment can create – and an ominous foreshadowing of where our society would go. If you haven’t seen the movie you truly must, it’s well executed and features Jim Carry in top form!

4. Forrest Gump

“Run, Forrest, Run!” The references, memes and even the songs that followed this movie will probably live on forever. Forest Gump was truly an iconic 90’s movie and will forever remain ingrained in pop culture. Incredibly emotional and endearing but also packed with drama and humor – this movie has it all. Tom Hank’s performance is one for the books and his tragic love story and life journey are guaranteed to make you cry.

5. Home Alone

Even having grown up in Egypt, Home Alone was one of those movies that characterized the 90’s for me. As a kid, the adventure and imagination that went into creating the traps for the burglars just had the younger me in awe. Heating up the door knob, covering the home invaders in feathers, and setting their heads on fire are all fun-filled sequences I will never forget! Many consider this to be a classic for the holiday season but I could watch it any day of the year!
