Best Chick-Flicks of the 2000s

Ready for another chick-flick night? Yeah, us too. The 2000s were no slouch when it came to putting out some quality chick-flicks. If you’ve already checked out our best lists from the 80’s and 90’s, it’s time to move on to something a little bit more contemporary. Here are some of our top picks for the best films in the chick-flick genre from 2000-2009.

The Notebook

We might as well go ahead and get this one in early. This movie was pretty much the mother of all modern day chick-flicks. If you manged to keep a dry eye the entire time while watching this film, you truly deserve some sort of award. Talk about enduring love. Sure, it may start out with the typical tropes of a poor boy who falls in love with a rich girl with disapproving parents, but it is still a pretty epic story. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. If you already have, it’s probably time for a re-watch.

How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days

This movie is big on laughs and well worth a watch. Kate Hudson is a writer who is on a mission. Instead of trying to think of all the usual ways to keep a man, she is trying to think of ways to break things off for a piece she’s writing. She goes to some pretty extreme and hilarious lengths to put off Matthew McConaughey. But, he is not so easily shook.  It’s a nice twist on the usual cliches you find in most movies in the genre. Queue this one up if you want to laugh.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

This excellent chick-flick doesn’t really get talked about enough. It has a powerhouse cast with the likes of Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, and Maggie Smith to name a few. When Siddalee Walker, a famous playwright, is interviewed by a magazine, she doesn’t hold back when it comes to what she considers the horrors of her childhood. When her mother gets wind of the interview, it doesn’t sit so well. Siddalee then gets kidnapped by her mother, and a group of the sassy friends her mom grew up with who called themselves the Ya-Ya’s. This is a real emotional roller-coaster of a movie that will have you laughing and crying. A lot.

Mean Girls

Definitely another “well, duh!” shout out on our list, but how could we not include this iconic chick-flick? You’re likely still quoting this movie to this day. Few movies were able to quite so accurately capture, and yet go completely over the top portraying, high school drama and politics like this one did. Whether you were ever a “new girl” in school or not like Cady, things could get pretty brutal.  This one is also laugh-out-loud funny, which never hurts in our book.

13 Going On 30

When you were a kid, how many times did you wish you were an adult? You’d get to stay up late, do whatever you want, and nobody could tell you what to do. Right. This light-hearted romp of a chick-flick sees one of those wishes come true when teenager Jenna finds herself to be transformed into a full-grown adult overnight. Naturally, hilarity ensues and Jenna soon finds out that there are definitely perks to being an adult. But, the whole “adulting” thing isn’t without its difficulties either. This one is perfect for when you just wanna be entertained.
