Cult Classic Movies From The 80’s You Gotta Watch

Sometimes, you’re late to the party. Sometimes it’s traffic, or you’re feeling under the weather, or you just simply forgot. When it comes to the 80’s, you might have missed the party because you weren’t even born yet. These days, it’s okay to be fashionably late. With the wonder of the internet, it’s never too late to enjoy some watch worthy film fodder from the 80’s. The 80’s actually produced a fair amount of cult classics that have stood the test of time. Whether you’re feeling nostalgic for films you might have loved as a child, or are willing to step in a time machine and check out some quality movies from before your time, you’ll want to peep these cult classic flicks.

The Goonies

In another universe, Thanos and Samwise Gamgee were brothers. Or at least the actors who played them were. Josh Brolin and Sean Astin are part of a gang of misfits known as the Goonies. When rich land developers seek to bulldoze their homes to make way for a golf course, the Goonies assemble to save their houses and keep their friendships intact. On their mission, they’ll fight a crime family, meet a cool guy named Sloth, and hunt for a legendary pirate treasure to raise the funds they need to help their families stay put. This movie is definitely a feel-good cult classic that you’ll likely fall in love with.

The Princess Bride

Few movies probably define an 80’s cult classic movie like this one does. Insanely quotable, highly re-watchable, and just downright fun, this movie has a bit of everything for everybody. The movie opens with a grandfather visiting his sick grandson. He brings him a book, The Princess Bride. The grandson isn’t quite sold at first, fearing that it might be, “a kissing book”. But when the grandfather assures him there are things like giants, sword fights, revenge, and true love in it, the kid relents and lets him read it. The movie itself is just plain gold. Anything written here is just going to undersell it, so do yourself a favor and watch!

Airplane! I and II

If you need a laugh, these are the 80’s cult films you’ve gotta watch. There’s been a disaster aboard a plane and the only man who can help is terrified of flying. Hilarity, naturally, ensues. Don’t go into either of these expecting anything even moderately high brow in the comedy department. The ha-ha’s here are silly, irreverent, and just absurdly amusing. If you’re a  Monty Python fan, you’ll love these.

Back to the Future

There are critics out there who actually argue that Back to the Future comes close to being “the perfect movie”. That debate aside, it is a great 80’s cult classic. Teenager Marty Mcfly travels back in time via a car time machine to save his friend. In the process, he nearly ends up erasing his own future. In the past, he runs into his mom and dad, who are in high school in their own time. He’s gotta make sure they fall in love so that he can one day exist. It is a great movie, with some great 80’s tunes to boot.
