Books to Read If You Miss Traveling

With global lockdowns and travel restrictions, it seems like we might not be allowed (or even want) to travel for a while. In the current climate, this is completely understandable but, as a travel lover and writer, it has been difficult to adapt to such a drastic change in circumstances. However, to make up for the lost time, I have been reading more travel books and guides than ever and I am feeling even more inspired than ever to travel again and see more of the world. If you also want to revitalise your wanderlust, here are some must read books to get you excited:

A Moveable Feast (Don George)

If you miss sampling the local cuisine on your travels, then Don George’s collection of essays by food and travel experts, such as the late Anthony Bourdain, has got you covered. From the must-tries to the must-nots, the book tells of the authors’ experience with cuisine from around the world, from Mexico to Korea and (almost) everywhere in-between.

Unlikely Destinations: The Lonely Planet Story (Maureen and Tony Wheeler)

Everyone – even with only the slightest passive interest in travel – has read something in Lonely Planet’s collections. The book tells of the extensive travel adventures of Maureen and Tony which inspired them to start what ultimately became the Lonely Planet we know today. Telling not only their stories from backpacking and trekking on limited budgets, the book details their trials and tribulations in revolutionising the world of independent traveling to what we see today.

World Walk (Steven Newman)

For a travel lover, Newman’s story an inspiring one: fulfilling a childhood dream to walk around the world. At the age of 28, he set off from Ohio, US, with only little money and belief that the world is filled with good people. In four years, he managed to walk across twenty countries and bag himself a world record on the way! Although, some of the – hiccups – that he encounters may leave you willing to just read, not emulate.
