Best Disney Movies Made Before You Were Born

The first feature-length Disney movie released was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This was way back in 1937. It didn’t actually hit nationwide theaters until the following year. Since then, Disney has become a film making powerhouse. While we all have our favorite Disney flicks that were made during our lifetime, there are some really great films produced long before we came into the world. Here are our top picks for great Disney classics from before you were born, that you’ve gotta see.

Mary Poppins

Debuting in 1964, this was movie simply ahead of its time, let alone ahead of ours. The delightful Julie Andrews played the cheeky, magical, no nonsense nanny to the Banks children. Although it’s since come to light that the author of the books the movie was based on, P.L. Travers, was less than thrilled with Disney’s take on her works, it is a beloved movie. With its blend of live action and animation, catchy songs, and sincerely touching moments, it is one of Disney’s best works from a fan perspective.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Released in 1988, some of us were likely alive and kicking when this one graced the screen. However, for those spring chickens among us, it’s possible you’ve never even heard of this movie. At the time, it had the highest budget of any film to date. Like Poppins, it too incorporated live action with animation. It also was a true cartoon powerhouse cross-over, featuring both characters from the Disney universe, as well as Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny. The movie was decidedly a little more adult than most Disney fodder. It was also gritty and a bit dark. The main character, Roger, is being framed for murder, after all. It was and is a great movie. It even went on to win three Academy Awards.

The Sword In The Stone

This Disney classic came out all the way back in 1963, and yet in endures as one of their finer works. This is Disney’s take on the legend of King Arthur, and it’s a whole lot of fun. Arthur, or as he’s called in the movie, “Wart”, doesn’t have a very happy home life. He dreams of being a knight, or even just a squire, but he’s told he doesn’t have the stuff for it. Enter Merlin, who starts to teach the “boy who would be king” life lessons through magic, and naturally, song. Merlin kind of steals the movie. He’s loving, kind, stern when he needs to be, and just a little bit crotchety.  There’s even a wizards duel in here, way before Harry and Voldemort made it cool.

Robin Hood

Debuting in 1973, Disney’s version of the very familiar tale of Robin Hood often doesn’t get the love it deserves. However, it is a solid movie. All the characters are animals, for starters. We all know animals are way more interesting than humans, so it’s got that going for it. The voice acting here is also top notch. Especially when it comes to the Disney version of the dastardly Prince John. The songs are catchy, and the movie is just plain enjoyable to watch. Disagree? We’ll challenge you to an archery contest!
