Can anyone with a pulse really resist cute, cuddly animals? Real talk: If space and money were no issue, I would have an absolute menagerie of pets. Science even says that having a pet has some incredibly positive health benefits. Pet owners can see a decrease in blood pressure, have feelings of loneliness eased, improved general mood, and experience lower pain and stress. Many animal shelters also present a chance to do some good and save a life, by adopting a pet rather than buying from a breeder or a store. Obviously, your best pet choice is a pooch. Dogs are marvelous creatures. They’re loyal, friendly, and are always happy to see you. Properly socialized, dogs are also always happy to make new two-legged friends. They’re also usually up for an adventure. Be it a walk in the park, or a road trip, dogs are down. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Pugs, and Beagles are all breeds known for their highly affable personalities.
Introverts prize their solitude and peace and quiet. They may crave an animal companion, but they don’t crave the social side of pet ownership. Introverts aren’t terribly keen on trading pet stories with strangers at the dog park, for example. For an introvert, a hedgehog makes an excellent pet. They’re cute and relatively low maintenance. Plus, have you ever seen a hedgehog eating? O.M.G.! These little guys will bond with you, and be happy to see you, but they aren’t needy. Not big on hedgehogs? A cat would also be right up your alley, given their independent nature.
If you’ve got a touch of control freak in your personality, you like things the way you like them. You want a pet, but you don’t want to change too much about your personal routine or surroundings. If this is you, some fish or a turtle would be the perfect pet for you. Neither really require any huge life changes or pet-proofing your living space. They are also perfect options if your space is limited. Watching fish swim is incredibly therapeutic. As for turtles, well they’re just plain cool and make great low maintenance pets. Not to mention, no potty training issue headaches.
Those with a go-with-the-flow type of personality could really take their pick. Their easy-going nature means they can bond with just about any type of pet. Horses and birds would both make excellent pets for the free spirit, because of their kindred nature. However, we’re going to suggest a ferret. Ferrets are members of the weasel family and they’re incredibly playful and free-spirited. They’re very smart little critters and can be taught tricks, and to walk on a leash just like a dog.
