Spotlight on: Dr. Martens

This one’s a trend that we can never seem to get enough of; the chunky platform classic boots and specifically Dr. Martens “Jadon” platform boots.

As a 90’s kid, I had around 3 pairs in my closet that I would alternate all week and the more torn and worn they looked the more I loved them. They are iconic boots that have been around since 1947 and one might wonder how a brand manufacturing a utilitarian boot transform into one of the most culturally relevant brands of the modern era? It is an exciting and unique story.

The story begins in post-war Munich, in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Martens, a 25-year-old soldier with a broken foot,  created a unique air-cushioned sole (rather than the traditional hard leather sole) to aid his recovery. He then began producing them in Germany using military supplies until 1959, when the boots caught the eyes of the Griggs company who immediately acquired an exclusive license to amend it and to produce it as well know it with the distinctive yellow welt stitch, a two-tone grooved sole edge, and a unique sole pattern. The boots were branded as ‘Airwair’ and came complete with a black and yellow heel loop featuring the brand name and the slogan “With Bouncing Soles”. Taking its name from the date of its inception, April 1st, 1960, the eight-holed 1460 Dr. Martens boot had arrived.

It became part of the 1970s social revolution with skinheads and Pete Townshend from The Who wearing them all the time thus forever changing this functional work-wear boot into a subcultural essential.

In the 1990’s it got adopted into the American subculture’s grunge scene with Kurt Cobain and Kourtney Love as the biggest idols wearing them.

Dr.Martens had a quiet 2000’s but by 2010 it got revitalized as it celebrated its fiftieth anniversary: five decades of music and celebrity association that has evolved into a social media frenzy in 2018 with the most significant influencers wearing the grungiest version of the boot and the one that has almost sold out everywhere in the world.

Women like  Marie Von Behrens from @MVB, Josefine H J from @Josefinehj and Negin Mirsalehi amongst many many others have bought them, wore them and styled them causing envy and frenzy everywhere.
