How To Not Overspend During Holidays

Even though the last big holiday rush may be behind us, it seems like there is always another holiday right around the corner. Another holiday, likely means another spending spree. Even with our best intentions, the gift-giving bug bites many of us. While it feels great at the time splurging on amazing goodies for everyone, when that bill comes, the reality sets in. We’ve assembled a few tips and tricks on how to not overspend during the holidays. You can even try to use these tactics all those other days of the year, and give your bank account a little breather.

Make A Budget (And Stick To It!)

We know, we know, easier said than done. But this is a biggie. Not just during the holidays, but year round. First of all, decide how much you can spend. From there, it’s not a bad idea to make a list. Write down everyone you intend to buy for. Then, allot a cash amount to each person. Or, if you have a few items already in mind, deduct the value of those items from your overall budget and work backwards. The earlier you do this, the more time you have to get creative and find deals. If you have a hard time sticking to your budget even with such careful planning, try a pre-paid card. You’ll be able to see each deduction and have a constant reminder of what you’re left with.

Be A Bargain Hunter

Take the time to look for deals. If you’re willing to put in a bit of time, chances are you can find some serious sales out there on the old interwebs. You don’t have to wait for major sales days. If you have some favorite retailers or brands, sign up for their rewards programs. Sign up for email notification for sales. Also, Amazon can be a veritable treasures trove of great, cheap finds. Try searching for an item followed by “under” a certain cash amount. It’s incredible some of the fantastic finds you can stumble upon using that simple tweak to your usual searches. Additionally, don’t be afraid to scroll, scroll, scroll. Some of Amazon’s best deals, for the exact same item, does not appear on that first page of results.

Don’t Buy For Yourself

Who among us has not caved and gotten ourselves a little something while shopping for someone else? While we certainly can tell ourselves “we deserve this”, it’s a major way people overspend. We know, it’s hard to resist. And yes, we agree, you do deserve all the things. But trust us, it will totally blow your budget.

Don’t Be Afraid To Go Homemade

Alright, so the budget is getting low, and you still have people on your list to gift. If you don’t want to overspend, consider a hand-made gift. Think cookies, or art, or anything your little creative self can create. Put together a bouquet of found flowers. Think outside the stores and outside the box. Or, gift your time. Have a friend with kiddies? A night of babysitting is a gift that is absolutely priceless.
