Since the 24th of June 2018, the driving World has welcomed an additional pole of women drivers from Saudi Arabia. Estimations say that the Kingdom could reach 3m female drivers by 2020, what an exciting moment to witness! With this in mind and knowing the high level of interest for anything tech-related coming from KSA, I tried to see how the automotive industry evolved tech-wise in the recent years and what cool technology we can now expect to find in the most recent car models. Here is a round-up of the coolest features I came across:
Thanks to this new tech, you won’t ever feel like there is too much light coming from the sunroof when you drive. By a simple touch, you can adjust, dim the lights with several settings from clear to dark. Which is absolutely perfect for our warm and sunny Middle Eastern weather!
Just like we changed the way we use our phones and tablets after buttons were replaced by touch-screen, cars have evolved in a similar direction. Although it may sound futuristic, this technology which essentially means you are waving your hands in a specific way without touching the car to trigger an action, is already in lots of cars. So next time you see someone making circles in their car, you will know that it is to increase the volume of the radio.
There are several ways, tech involved in this one: from steering pattern monitoring to lane monitoring cameras, cameras that will watch the driver’s eye movements and a more sophisticated one where body signals are measured at all time: heart rate, muscle activity and brain activity.
The infotainment systems in cars have for a long time been pretty boring and not super user-friendly. Manufacturers have sort of given up and are letting third party apps do what they do best, which is why you can now plug the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to turn your base infotainment system in an interface very similar to your phones but with a selection of apps only (Phone, Music, Maps, Messages, Now Playing, Podcasts, and Audio). To configure these apps, all you need to do is download the app onto your phone and plug your phone into your car’s system.
We are familiar with cruise control, but this is next-level control, the car will automatically slow down, brake and adjust the speed based on cars in front.
It was already our best friend that ensures a smooth parking but now the rear sensors will also trigger an alert if there are any pedestrians, trolleys, or other vehicles approaching yours.
The automotive industry decided to make this one standard in all new cars by 2022, so a lot of vehicles already have it today. Essentially, if the various sensors around the car see the threat of a potential crash, it will automatically apply the brakes to minimize the impact of the accident.
