Bandersnatch – is it worth the hype?

If you don’t know what Black Mirror is or haven’t seen any of the past episodes, I don’t even know what to tell you at this point. Have you been hiding out in a cave somewhere?? So first thing’s first – go watch them, you can thank me later.

Following their initial 3 seasons on Netflix, the show recently released a new, longer episode, named Bandersnatch. After it came out on December 28th 2018, Bandersnatch took the world by storm. What’s so special about it you ask? Well, let me tell you.

In a nutshell, Black Mirror episodes each tell a unique story about some form of dystopian technological possibility. The whole idea (and what’s so innately terrifying) is that these ‘alternative’ worlds are not so alternative at all. The more you watch, the more you realize how close we are to the events that transpire in the episode. In fact, a lot of the time it’s a little too easy to see ourselves in them…and in Bandersnatch we truly become a part of it.

What’s so characteristic of this new movie, Bandersnatch, is that it involves you in the experience so much more. First of all, you make the decision for the character. So every once in a while the main character will have a choice to make between to option and you’re the one who chooses. Now, where it gets really next level mind-bending is that the character eventually recognizes that his decision are being made for him. Resulting in a variety of possible endings that are each equally mind-blowing in their own way.

So the movie actually can’t be summed up, because it is different for everyone depending on the choices they made. The entire message, our part in it, and how the episode is set out is riddled with metaphors about our life. It can honestly be analyzed forever. This is no surprise for Black Mirror though as the show is, in essence, a commentary on our society and technology in it.

But apart from all the deep, hidden messages. The episode and your engagement in it as a viewer mean you’re not bored for a second. Seriously, I re-watched it the following day because it was just THAT good.

In case you can’t tell yet, I definitely recommend for you to watch it, right now. You won’t regret it.

Side note: For those who didn’t know, the name Black Mirror actually refers to our screens (this might not blow your mind as much as it did mine but still, worth sharing). Look at your locked phone or tablet screen… it’s a BLACK MIRROR. Get it?
