Benefits of Eating Berries

Strawberries, Cherries, Raspberries, and more! Berries are both delicious and nutritious and have several benefits to eating them. Whether you like your good ol’ fruit salad, enjoy your fruit as a dessert, or crave a yummy breakfast smoothie – there is never a bad time to eat your berries! Check out our list of reasons why you should eat berries and the benefits that come along with them. What’s your favorite berry? – Or, do you just like them all?

They’re Loaded with Antioxidants

Berries are a great source of antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, ellagic acid, and resveratrol. In addition to protecting your cells, these plant compounds may reduce the risk of several diseases! One study showed that blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries have the highest antioxidant activity of commonly consumed fruits, next to pomegranates. In fact, several studies have confirmed that the antioxidants in berries may help reduce oxidative stress! Grab a bowl of berries and try out some yoga next time you wake up in the morning – it makes a difference!

High Fiber Intake

Berries are a good source of fiber, including soluble fiber. Studies show that consuming soluble fiber slows down the movement of food through your digestive tract, leading to reduced hunger and increased feelings of fullness – and since berries are sweet, no more sweet cravings too. Buh-bye chocolate! Fiber also helps reduce the number of calories you absorb from mixed meals – meaning berries are great if you want to cut down on other foods like carbs and fats!

They Help Fight Inflammation

Inflammation is your body’s defense against infection or injury and berries have strong anti-inflammatory properties!  Modern lifestyles often lead to excessive, long-term inflammation due to increased stress, inadequate physical activity, and unhealthy food choices. This type of chronic inflammation is believed to contribute to conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, although, studies suggest that the antioxidants in berries may help lower inflammatory markers.

They Improve Insulin Response

Berries may improve your blood sugar and insulin levels. They may protect your cells from high blood sugar levels, help increase insulin sensitivity, and reduce blood sugar and insulin response to high-carb meals. With that in mind – it is important to know that these effects occur in both healthy people and those with insulin resistance.

So, grab a bowl of berries and get to munching!
