Hacks to Saving Money in Dubai

Many of us head to the UAE to chase career goals and make the most of those tax-free salaries – ‘I’ll stay for a couple of years and save’ says pretty much everyone when they first step off the plane. Seven years later, how much have you got to show for those savings? Well, saving does take a certain level of discipline in a city with so much to see and do (and buy) but If you put your mind to it, there are ways to spend your money wisely (and always within your means).

1. Getting from A to B

If you’re renting a car, decide on your short and long-term goal here. If you plan to stay a year or less, then rent a car; if you’re in it for the long haul, then a second hand car is a smarter investment. (Oh, and maybe don’t go for the most expensive option).

Public transport. I know it’s not the same as taking the subway in New York or the bus in London, where you kind of have to because driving is much more difficult, but public transport is great here – it may only go in one line, but use it for the main part of the journey and then either walk the rest of the way, or hop in a taxi!

Walk! OK, summer doesn’t count, but you’ve got no excuse as we come into the winter season over here – save that taxi fare and get those steps in!

2. Hold out for the sales

Dubai Shopping Festival and Black Friday are just a couple of landmark moments in the retail calendar, and if you’re a keen shopper, then look these up. Do a little bit of window shopping, give the Outlet Village a visit for all your favourite brands, and don’t be averse to holding out, have a little patience.

3. Be selective

With minimalism getting such a big push at the moment, it’s important to be selective with our spending habits – choose quality over quantity, whether your pay cheques are going on shopping or going out, it’s hard to sustain having it all, all of the time, so choose to treat yourself from time to time, which also keeps things more exciting and  more valued, right?

4. The fitness formula

Don’t sign up to huge commitments at huge costs. January is the prime time for unnecessary sign-ups, when we all feel a little fluffy round the edges after the holidays and we are looking to get back in shape. Instead of signing up for a year, start with smaller packages at studios you love and know you will go to. Remember fitness can be free of charge too! Get outdoors for the cooler season – go for a swim, a jog, a long walk. Even take the stairs up to your apartment and feel the burn! (I live on the 30th floor so I know how effective it is). Staying fit and healthy is essential, but it doesn’t have to be the costliest thing that you do.
