6 Apps To Help Train Your Brain

The Wellness industry is absolutely booming at the moment, and it’s an incredibly positive and powerful movement, but it also requires some filtering to weed out the good vs the not-so-good initiatives. The majority of this wellness focuses primarily on physical fitness: gym time, workouts, nutrition advice, active living, etc. etc. But what about the mental side of it all? The brain is the same as the rest of the body – work it out and see it build strength, leave it alone for too long and it loses its sharpness. Here is a list of useful apps to help keep our brains active and working to their full potential.

1. Elevate

Focusing on reading, writing, speaking and mathematical problem-solving, this app gives you access to 35+ games which you can customize daily, choosing between 3 to 5 games within a particular area of focus, and you’ve got unlimited access to train whenever and wherever, as well as access to performance tracking to see how you are progressing!

2. CogniFit Brain Fitness

Developed with the help of neuroscientists, this app focuses on improving overall cognitive abilities – including memory and concentration. Let’s face it, our attention spans are a little shorter these days, so this is a good one to try. By spending 20-30 minutes over the course of the week, the app can provide performance data to mark an improvement over time. And you can also play challenge rounds with friends if you’re the competitive type.

3. Lumosity

This app gives you a fresh brain workout every day to challenge memory, problem-solving and thinking. Because we have such easy access to answers online (thank you Google), we do a lot less problem-solving, and our brains are lacking in that abstract way of thinking sometimes. There are three games per session, with a clock timing your progress, so the challenge is definitely on!

4. Braingle

Braingle is a community space, where users can submit riddles, rate puzzles and play brain teaser games with other users. This app is unique in that it focuses on games that help to maintain the sharpness of the brain and improve reasoning ability through riddles and optical illusions. Definitely not my forte, but will totally give it a go.

5. Eidetic

Remember when we had to memorize phone numbers in the age before mobile phones? Well, maybe you don’t but anyway, Eidetic is a memory enhancement app that uses a technique called ‘spaced repetition’ to help users memorize information such as important phone numbers, credit card details and passwords. You also get a little notification every now and then to see what you remember, which is great for your long-term memory practice.

6. Happify

This is an app that works on the fundamentals of positive psychology, providing effective tools and programs to help you take control of your feelings and thoughts – whether sad, anxious or stressed. Loaded with a range of quizzes, polls and gratitude journals, the scientific backing in mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy is what makes this app totally worth downloading.
