Best Nostalgia Picks on Disney+

Disney’s streaming service is now live, and oh boy is it packed with plenty of nostalgia fodder. Disney is taking the streaming wars thing pretty seriously. At launch, Disney+ already boasted just shy of 500 movies and over 7500 TV episodes. That all equals some serious binge time. If your inner child is screaming with excitement, it might be hard to know where to even start. But, we’ve combed through the Disney+ vault to assemble a list of titles that will have your nostalgia going off the charts. Here’s some of our top picks.

A Goofy Movie

In 1995, this highly underrated gem came out. The movie revolves around the relationship between single dad Goofy, and his teenage son Max. Max is hungry for a little independence, and some space. He’s a teenager, after all. Fearing his relationship with his son is unraveling, Goofy takes Max on a road trip in an attempt to strengthen their bond. While this movie never really gets the love it deserves, it is definitely worth a watch. Especially now that we’re a bit older and might appreciate Goofy’s position a little more. There’s plenty of warmth and heart. Plus, there’s always that Powerline concert to revisit. Just an FYI for an extra Disney+ fueled nostalgia boost, Goof Troop is also available to stream.

Darkwing Duck

This bit of animated gold came out all the way back in 1991. This was before the explosion of all things Marvel and superheros. But, somehow, this show managed to walk that fine line between lovingly paying homage to what made superheros great, and poking fun at them. If your nostalgia doesn’t kick into high gear when you hear the theme song, you might want to check your pulse.

The Sandlot

Okay, hear us out on this one. This is a great movie. Yes, there’s a central theme that involves baseball. However, you totally don’t need to really like baseball, or any sport for that matter, to enjoy this flick. At its heart, this movie is about the power of friendship and the importance and weight of the bonds we forge in our childhood. It’s about finding a place where you feel like you belong. If you’ve ever heard someone randomly declare, “You’re killin’ me, Smalls!”, and had no idea where it came from, this is the movie. Disney+ delivers on the nostalgia for our childhoods in spades here.

Home Alone and Home Alone 2

What 90’s kid didn’t love the Home Alone movies? Even though a big portion of their running times deal with beating up two adult men, they are still funny. That’s because the “violence” was cartoonish rather than outright malicious. And really, you had to hand it to Kevin. That kid was an inventive and resourceful little genius. Albeit, slightly sadistic? Oh well, don’t overthink it! Just enjoy the nostalgia fest.

Muppet Treasure Island

Are you ever really too old to love the Muppets? Disney+ actually has a few different Muppet movies up for bids. These include the more recent Muppet movies, and some of the good ol’ classics. However, there’s just something about watching the Muppets take on classic literature. (BTW, if you haven’t seen the Muppets version of A Christmas Carol, do it. Do it now.) Kermit and crew just have a way of tickling the nostalgia bone in the best of ways.
