Dinner And A Movie: The Lion King (Original)

If you weren’t permanently scarred by the death of Mufasa, did you even really have a childhood? The animated version of The Lion King came out way back in 1994. With its beautiful animation, catchy songs, and iconic characters, the movie was a big hit. By the time it finished its run in theaters, the movie would earn the title of the highest grossing release of 1994. It also became the second highest grossing film of all time, animated or otherwise. Though it’s since toppled from that spot, the movie endures as a beloved favorite of both children and adults. If it’s been awhile since you hung out with Simba and pals, why not cook up some fun on theme food and have a dinner and a movie night in?

Movie Fun Facts:

The Wildebeest Stampede Took 3 Years To Create

Who can forget that terrifying moment when the wildebeest come charging down into the valley in full stampede mode? It was 6 minutes of intensity that required a long time to see to fruition. The scene even required a new program to keep the wildebeest from running through each other. We won’t talk about what happened when the dust finally settled.

A Screenwriter Dubbed It “Bamblet”

Apparently, when the movie was first pitched, it was presented to the screenwriter in question as having elements of both Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the movie Bambi. From then on, she referred to the film as “Bamblet”. “The Lion King” was definitely an improvement in the title department.

The Ending Was Supposed to Be Different

In one draft of The Lion King, Simba lost the final fight to Scar. However, Scar’s victory would be short lived as he would soon after perish in a fire.

The Eats:

So, feel like you could eat a herd of wildebeests? We’ve got some tasty on-theme recipes that will perfectly compliment your return to the savanna. Just remember not to sing “The Circle of Life” with food in your mouth.

To Drink: Circle of Life Punch

Remember all those gorgeous scenes with the sun looming over the African savanna? The riot of oranges, yellows, and reds that literally painted the sky? Well, now you can have it in drink form. The drink recreates a sunrise (or sunset), by using lemon-lime soda, mango passion fruit juice, blood orange, and pomegranate juice. It’s super delicious and refreshing, not to mention, gorgeous to look at.

The Main Course: African Beef Stew

When animators needed inspiration for drawing the landscape of The Lion King, they naturally headed to Africa. Kenya’s Great Rift Valley and Hell’s Gate National Park were the actual real life inspirations behind those gorgeous drawn settings. African Beef stew is a popular dish in Kenya. It is traditionally made with any sort of meat available. Chicken, beef, and goat are all very popular choices for the dish. The meat is simmered in a flavorful sauce consisting of tomatoes, coconut milk, cinnamon, curry, paprika, and garlic. This is a super tasty dish that will have you chowing down like an animal. Dessert: Dirt and Worms

Okay, don’t worry, it’s not literally dirt and worms. In a nod to Timon and Pumba’s diet of choice, this fun dessert features Oreo cookie crumbs to look like soil. There’s chocolate pudding below to mimic dirt, or earth. Then, your just arrange some candy worms so they look like they’re coming up out of the cookie and pudding “dirt”. It’s a totally simple dessert that’s also delicious, and definitely on theme. Make sure to use a clear container to serve so your layers can be seen. We love this version from Food, Fun, Family.
