Healthy Ways to Enjoy the Sunshine

Waking up to a sunny day is a great feeling, and we are pretty spoiled with the weather in this part of the world, but bear in mind, it does come with its pitfalls and the sun can be your skins worst enemy if you’re not careful. This isn’t just the case for those lazy afternoons at the beach, or out on the ski slopes! Your sun needs protecting every time you run out to the shop, on your daily commute, or when you’re out walking the dog – all those bursts of exposure add up, so here are few ways to make sure you’re taking care of skin while enjoying those warm rays.

Sun screen

The massively obvious one, and yet, many of us seem to use it so sparingly, worried that we won’t have that delicious golden tan if we cover up. Well, maybe the tan will take longer to achieve, but at least you wont look like a shrivelled prune in a few years’ time. Its’ super easy to buy a moisturiser that contains an SPF, making it part of your daily skin routine anyway, so you won’t have to feel that gunky film on your face all day. Oh, and remember to reapply your SPF throughout the day!

Hair protection

Just like our skin, our hair can be easily damaged by the sun’s rays – getting dry and brittle after constant exposure. Once the outside layer of the hair becomes damaged, the inside loses its healthy bounce and condition, leaving it a little lifeless. There are plenty of UV sprays on the market – some doubling up as hair de-tanglers and skin SPFs too. Spray it on before blow drying, or when heading to the beach to give your hair a little layer of protection from those intense rays.

UV Sunglasses

Sunglasses are not just for the aesthetic appeal – you want them to actually serve a purpose too. And protecting your eyes is what they should be doing! When shopping for your next pair of trend setters, look out for the UV400 labels that offer both UVA and UVB protection. Polarised lenses are a good option as they reduce glare by filtering the light, but they don’t actually offer UV protection, so try to find a blend of both qualities in your next pair of sunglasses.

SPF Lip Balm

It’s the one we always forget! At least I know I do, then I come home from the beach with lips that crack with every smile. This is just as important as the sun cream, otherwise you might face premature thinning of the lips, which is very much the antithesis to the current lip plumping trend going on right now. Whether you’re on a tropical beach, or under the sunny rays atop a snowy mountain, those lips will need some protection – ideally with ingredients including natural oils, beeswax, and petrolatum, as well as SPF. You’re welcome!

Window protection

How often are you sitting in your car? Or in front of a window at the office? Or even on a plane or train? Chances are, one of them applies, and you’d be surprised at just how much this can affect your skin health. Although car windscreens are designed with a protective film against UVA rays, most side windows and sun roofs aren’t – so keep this in mind when on the road. And if you’re lucky enough to have the sunny window seat at the office, keep that skin covered with sunscreen and protective clothing.
