How to start a Podcast

Podcasts have never been so popular. They allow to rest our eyes while still being entertained, educate ourselves or kill boredom. They are portable, they don’t contain (too much) advertising and the variety of content we can find now is incredible. Do you have an idea for a Podcast? Here are a few tips on how to get started.

1. The idea

What theme are you going for? If you are not a famous person, finding and sticking to a particular theme will make it easier for you to gain listeners. Popular themes include feminism, crimes, books & movies, chat shows or business tips.

2. Your brand

Listeners will find you visually first. Spend time working on your cover artwork, your hopefully catchy name, and SEO-friendly description.

3. The microphone

Of course, a good podcast means good sound quality. This doesn’t mean you need to rent a recording studio, but a good microphone will make a difference. If you prefer to start from your phone, check out Podcast recorder apps such as Spreaker or iRig Recorder, they will definitely improve the quality of your recording from your phone.

4. The audio editing software

Just like for a film, recording a podcast without editing is very complicated. Adding sound effect, making sure you are only keeping the most interesting part of the podcast and ensuring a good flow is essential for the success of your show. Adobe Audition and Audacity are your go-to software’s.

5. Hosting

Your audio files need to be hosted to be shared. The two main podcasts hosts are Blubrry and Libsyn where you pay the hosting fee monthly based on the storage space you need.

6. Submit your podcast

Finally! Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher. Take your pick!
