Winter Sport Destinations

The holidays may be over, but the winter weather continues (outside of the Middle East that is), so to beat those January blues we are looking at some key winter destinations to make the most of this season. Check out these six winter sport destinations for your next adventure trip abroad.

1. Japan – skiing

One of my favourite countries, Japan has so many different things to offer a holiday-goer, and this time of year it’s perfect for a spot of skiing. Niseko, located in Hokkaido is a 2.5-hour drive from the airport, and has four interlinked ski resorts to choose from. Renowned for its consistency and quality of powder snow throughout the winter, averaging about 15m+ of snow each season, this is a great option for an active winter getaway.

2. Tanzania – trekking

If a trek is on the cards, then Tanzania is a great shout for an adventure to the highest mountain in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is a great opportunity for a climb, and although slightly out of season, December can be a good time to go because there are less trekkers on the path – you may run into more cloud and rain though. Oh, and it will probably get pretty chilly up there, but because of the mountain’s microclimate, you never really know what to expect weather-wise, so pack for all eventualities.

3. Italy – indulging

One for the snow foodies, the Italian Dolomites are up there (quite literally) for great skiing and great food – a hard match to find in many places. Head to Alta Badia and see how seriously this place takes their food and wine, so after an exhausting day on the slopes, you can expect a meal of epic proportions, with three Michelin-starred restaurants to sample in the area’s mountain refuges.

4. Canada – ice hockey

You don’t necessarily need to be playing the game yourself, go be a spectator and get involved in the buzz around this awesome team sport. If you’re going to be in Canada this winter season – head to Montreal, Vancouver or Calgary and watch one of the local teams play; you’ll get such an insight into both the sport and the country in which it was born.

5. Switzerland – snow curling

I know, I know, it’s all about the snow, but maybe you’re not into skiing, or you’re looking for a little après ski maybe? Well, curling could be a fun way to learn a new sporty skill on your next trip to the beautiful Zermatt in Switzerland. And if that doesn’t float your boat, then try ice skating instead! There are plenty of options, so you’ll never be out of things to do on a winter holiday.

6. Utah – snowboarding

Just 35 minutes from Salt Lake City, Snowbird Ski Resort is the perfect place to spend a winter weekend (or two). Seeing plenty of snowstorms dropping tons of powder on the resort throughout the winter months, the terrain here is like a winter playground, with conditions set for snowboarding and skiing sessions all day long. What’s not to love?
