Biggest Travel Mistakes

Many of us wish we could travel more. Travel often brings amazing experiences and gives us the opportunity to make some long-lasting memories. But, even the most seasoned of travelers can sometimes make travel mistakes. Whether you’re a frequent flier, or a random road trip kinda gal, there are travel sins you should definitely try to avoid. Here are some of the biggest mistakes any potential voyager might be guilty of from time to time.

Not Learning A Few Words In The Native Language

For international travel, you should always make an effort to learn at least a few words and phrases in the native tongue. Now, nobody expects you to be fluent. However, knowing how to say “please”, “thank you”, and a few of the basics can go a long way with the locals. Hand gestures and pleading looks can only get you so far.

Not Having Hard Copies Of Your Reservation Details

Look, internet goes down. Your phone might go missing. You might not be able to find the email even if you do have your phone and internet. Printing out a copy, or writing down the info of your reservations, is key to making sure things go as smoothly as possible. Preparing for the worst case scenario is never a bad idea.

Overpacking

This is one of those travel mistakes that many of us are guilty of. Remember that sometimes we have to sacrifice fashion for function. Plus, airlines these days can really zap you for going over the weight limits for luggage. Do you really need 13 outfits for a single day? Do you really need a dozen swimsuits for a 3 day beach vacation? Some might answer these questions with a resounding, “Yes!’. Well then, it’s you we’re looking at. Lay out all the items you intend to pack before you put them in your luggage. Instead of asking yourself, “Will it fit?”, ask yourself ,“Do I really need it?”.

Not Checking Out Your Rental Car For Damage

If you’re going to be renting a car on your holiday, it is absolutely essential you do a pre-check for damage. If you see dings, dents, scrapes or other damage, snap a pic right away. Do this before you even drive off the lot. Many car rental companies will do this themselves, but it’s never a bad idea to have the backup just in case.

Planning Too Much

Yes, FMO is a real thing. This can be especially true when traveling. However, stuffing your days to the brim with activities and plans is one of the hugest travel mistakes out there. It can be so tempting to try to fit everything under the sun in, especially if you’re going to one of your dream destinations. Who knows when and if you’ll ever get to see this place again, so the desire is strong to do all the things. Just remember that if you run yourself ragged, you’re going to end up exhausted and burnt out. That will put a serious damper on any vacation, no matter the local.
