Things To Do In Riyadh, KSA

As the capital city of Saudi Arabia, you might just assume that Riyadh has plenty of interesting things for an intrepid traveler to explore. You’d be right. The city itself, as well as the areas just outside of it, offer up countless possibilities to be wowed and entertained. There’s history, there’s modernity, there’s nature, there’s shopping, all just waiting for you to explore. This is a place that is sure to exceed your expectations. But with so much on offer, what are some of the absolute must-sees? We’ve got a few suggestions for you.

Get Lofty

There’s just something about the view of a city from up on high. The sea of glittering buildings under the sun by day, and the twinkling of all those lights at night, is truly something to behold. For the best 360 degree views, you’ll want to stop by the Sky Bridge located at the Kingdom Center building. There you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular urban views from over 302 metres in the air. Locally called “the Bottle Opener”, you can see this behemoth of a building from just about everywhere in the city. These unparalleled views do come at a price, but at only around SAR 60, it’s an absolute steal.

Tour Historical Diriyah

Before Riyadh became the capital city of the KSA, Diriyah held that distinction. It also served as the original home of the Saudi royal family. The history of the place actually goes back thousands of years, and it’s even been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recently, massive efforts have been made to not only restore the ruins of the old settlements, but to also breathe new life into the area. There’s a new museum, for starters, and also a new district just outside the historic area called Al Bujairy Centre. Here you’ll find modern conveniences like shops, restaurants, and even ice cream parlors, but built in a style which represents the original, traditional architecture.

Get Your Museum On

The National Museum in Riyadh is beyond impressive. It’s incredibly hi-tech, and has eight exhibition halls to explore. Here, local culture and history burst forth from all types of displays and presentations. The collections housed here really do an impressive and immersive job of detailing the history and culture of the Saudi people. The cost to visit is only SAR 10 for adults, with children and students able to get in for free.

Have Some Fun On The Red Dunes

About a 45 minute drive from the hustle and bustle of central Riyadh, you’ll find the spell-binding Red Sand Dunes. This is a popular place to get out, unwind, and do some dune surfing or quad riding. This is also a top notch picnic spot, as the scenic area not only boasts those beautifully colored dunes, but plenty of majestic mountains, too. You might even get a chance to spy some roaming camel herds.
