Who doesn’t love a good ghost story? Every country and civilization has tales of the supernatural woven into the fabric of its culture. When you think of spooky places, a few destinations might instantly spring to mind. Try to even hear “Transylvania” of Romania and not instantly equate it with Dracula who was based on the flesh and blood Vlad The Impaler. If you’re looking to add some other-worldly, hauntingly good fun to your next travel vacation, you might want to check out these spooky locations.

Bran Castle // Romania

Speaking of Dracula, Bran Castle in Bran Romania is thought to be the castle that Bram Stoker used as inspiration in his novel. It certainly fits the bill nestled amid large jagged mountains and with its sharp spires seeming to pierce the sky. The villages around Bram are still rife with the superstition that ghosts and vampire-like creatures called “steregoi” haunt the area by night. It’s unknown if Vlad Tepes himself actually ever inhabited the castle, but it IS known that he did spend two months there as a prisoner. Either way, it’s a place permeated with a supernatural air that is sure to get your imagination running wild.

Poveglia Island // Italy

If you want to have a little spooky fun next time you’re in Venice and have already seen the catacombs, then this is a site you’ll want to see. The place has a very checkered past and has long been abandoned. Even local fisherman are said to avoid it because it’s so haunted. The island was a dumping ground where plague victims were sent to die in quarantine in the late 1700s. Then, in the 1920s, existing buildings on the site were turned into a psychiatric hospital. But stories began to circulate that the lead doctor was torturing and performing bizarre experiments on the patients. That doctor would go on to throw himself off of a bell tower to his death. Today, several boat tours are available to show you the island and are especially popular at Halloween.

New Orleans // USA

The city of New Orleans in the state of Louisiana has so many haunted places that it’s been called the most haunted city in the US. The history of New Orleans is steeped in the supernatural, and Voodoo played and continues to play, a major part in its culture. The city truly is a world apart where the supernatural is taken as a given and death is often celebrated more than mourned. As macabre as it sounds, if you’ve never seen a Jazz funeral march, you’re kinda missing out. Several bed and breakfasts in the area claim to be haunted. So, if you would like to spend the night with some spirits, this would be an excellent place to go. For haunted places, visit Lalaurie Mansion and see the torture chamber, The Sultan’s Palace, or St Luis Cemetery No. 1.
