Where In The World: Island Edition

For some of us, we’re perpetually fantasizing about being at the beach. We daydream about the soothing crash of the waves upon some gorgeous sun-soaked shore. We miss the feel of soft sand between our toes. We love a good shady palm tree dipping towards crystal clear blue waters. Life just seems to be better at the beach. For those beach-loving kindred spirits, we’ve put together an island edition of our travel guessing game. For those new to our Where In the World series, we’re going to list some fun things to see and do in a secret location. It’s up to you to see if you can guess where we’re talking about. As always, no relying on Google. Wits only for this game, please.

Climb A Volcanic Spire

When visiting our mystery location, there’s something in-particular that you are bound to notice. The Pitons are two giant volcanic plugs that rise out of the landscape and command attention. There are two formations, Gros Piton and Petit Piton. Gros Piton is the highest of the two, climbing over 798 metres into the sky. Petit piton isn’t far behind, and is only around 50 metres shorter. You’ll find them located near the town of Soufriere. These formations created from volcanic materials are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hiking one of these mammoth natural wonders are on many a visitor’s must-do list. Once reaching the summit, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of the Soufriere Bay and beyond.

Get An Education In Chocolate

Our island edition destination grows a lot of two particular crops: bananas and chocolate. All over the island, cocoa pods are grown in profusion. There are two historic plantations which you can tour that will take you through the process of growing cocoa pods and harvesting the beans to be processed into chocolate. Fond Doux and Morne Coubaril plantations are the places to seek out if that sounds up your alley. If you want to earn your Phd in chocolate, then you’ll want to seek out either Rabot Estate or Boucan by Hotel Chocolat. Here you can book tours and experiences that will take you through the entire process, from tree to bar. You can even make your own chocolate bars.

Take A Dip In The Sulphur Springs

Skip heading to a fancy spa, and instead go natural. Our island edition mystery spot just so happens to be home to the “only drive-in volcano in the world”. Sulphur Springs Park may not smell the sweetest, but it is definitely something to see. How often is it that you can drive right past an active volcano? Not to worry, rather than lava, this volcano emits sulfuric steam. Just downstream from the volcanic opening, visitors looking to rejuvenate and pamper their skin can find some mud baths and pools. The pools have been famous for years for their ability to help stress melt away, relieve tense muscles, and help skin ailments. There are showers and changing rooms nearby, just make sure you don’t wear your best bathing suit.

Avail Yourself Of The Beautiful Beaches

You knew this was coming, right? Our island edition local has no shortage of gorgeous beaches to lounge on. For starters, there’s Sugar Beach, which is a favorite for its soft sand and view of the Pitons. There’s also Reduit Beach, beloved by both locals and tourists alike for its vast shorelines, breath-taking sunsets, and close proximity to accommodations and eateries. Also not to be missed is the beach at Anse Chastanet, which features some really beautiful looking silvery sand. Still haven’t had enough? Well then, make sure you don’t pass up Marigot Bay. It’s a spellbinding natural harbor and a great place to charter a day-sail excursion. Also of note is that all beaches on the island are public. Even the ones that are near resorts.
