#SelfcareSaturday: Taking Care of Bleached Hair

It’s summertime – which means tans, cute mani-pedis, and lighter hair! A lot of the time, especially if you absolutely love changing up your look – we tend to base our hair colors off of the season we’re in. Since its summer, it’s time to get to bleaching! What many people don’t know is that when you bleach your hair at home, you don’t have the right professional equipment and products to keep your locks healthy! Keep reading to learn more about taking care of your gorgeous new blonde look this summer.

Trim the Ends

It is always healthy to trim an inch off of your hair at least once every two months. When bleaching your hair, this is especially important – but why? The ends of your hair is where most of the damage lies and when bleaching it, it can cause it to worsen. After you’ve bleached your hair and it had dried after washing, grab a pair of scissors and chop a little off of your ends. This will remove the damaged hairs and split ends, allowing your hair to grow faster and healthier without the ends splitting further upwards.

Skip a Wash

Did you know that washing your hair every day actually damages it and dries out your scalp? For the average person, every other day, or every 2 to 3 days, without washing is generally fine. Your hair produces its own natural hair oils or sebum which helps to keep it smooth, moisturized, and prevents breakage. Excessive washing strips hair of its natural oils and can lead to hair that’s dry and brittle especially if you have recently bleached it.

No-Heat Styling

It’s summer, let your natural waves be wild and free! Daily use of a straightener or curling wand can damage your hair, particularly if — like many straightener addicts — your hair is already coarse and dry. The heat dries out your hair, making it more vulnerable to split ends and breakage. The more heat you use, and the more frequently you use it, the worse the damage will be. Keep in mind, though the color looks nice and fresh, bleach still causes damage to your hair – so, why add more with unnecessary heat styling?

Purple Shampoo

PURPLE SHAMPOO – we absolutely cannot stress this enough! Purple shampoo is great for protection from a whole host of things from UV rays from the sun to chlorine, mineral impurities in water, and, of course, bleach damage! Not only that, but if you’re bleaching your hair at home, once you first rinse it out, you may notice a rusty orange color – which nobody wants. Using purple shampoo cleanses the strands or your hair and dispenses a purple pigment that helps your locks return to a cooler tone.
