Makeup Tips for Olive Skin

Navigating the makeup world can be a challenge for Olive Skin tones. You tend to tan easily, and this makes for a complexion that’s constantly changing year-round, making something like choosing the right foundation or concealer an arduous task.  We feel your pain ladies! Here are a few tips on helping you understand your skin tone and selecting the right makeup products for you.

Foundation & Concealer

The struggle with choosing the right shade for your olive skin tone usually lies in the product being either too warm or too ashy – even if it seems like the right color. That’s probably because you’re matching to the surface color of your skin without considering your undertone. Your skin’s undertone, aka the underlying color that sits beneath the surface, can either be warm, cool or neutral, and the success of your match will depend entirely on if the product caters to your undertone or not.

A tip is to match the foundation to your neck instead of your face, as the skin color there is less likely to change year-round.

Eye Shadow

My dear Olive-skinned beauty you are in luck, there’s a whole bunch of eyeshadow colors that will compliment your skin tone. Colors like bronzes, coppers and golds will really make your eyes shine. While silvers, whites and pastels tend to wash you out. If you’re seeking a lighter color, choose something that has an orange base like a peach, or a darker beige.

For more standout colors, deeper colors are you friend – go for cooler colors like rich greens, blues or purples. An occasional orange-red in the crease also never hurt anybody 😉

Blush

With that gorgeous olive skin, for your blush you want to pick something in either the coral or peach family. A deep rose shade will also look gorgeous on you.

Highlight

HIGHLIGHT. Do you have any idea how stunning glowing olive skin looks?! Well, you probably do because you have it but still. Steer clear from highlights in the silver family and stick instead to golden, or even coppery ones. Don’t be afraid to experiment with highlighters that look too dark, chances are they’ll look great on you. Of course, when in doubt a trusted gold highlighter won’t fail you.

Bronzer

Bronzer can be a bit tricky for olive tones, you don’t want to choose something that will make you look like an umpa lumpa but also some bronzers don’t show up on your skin. The safe bet here is to pick something that’s more on the shimmery side, deep golden browns are perfect. Careful though, if you’re looking to use this as contour then pick a non-shimmery cool brown as it will mimic the natural shadows on your face.

Lipstick

Truth is, you basically have carte blanche with lipsticks. Most of them will suit you! When it comes to nudes just make sure you go for something with a brown tinge instead of beige and you’ll be surprised how well that compliments you. But otherwise, seriously you can try anything from reds to oranges to dark browns, to purples, and even black – you name it! Try to avoid colors that are too light though – like lilacs or icier shades as these will wash you out.

Now go forth and venture into the makeup world with confidence, you are ready now!
