The Ultimate Guide to Buns

We all love a good hair-do moment, and what better – and, not to mention, easy – way to style your hair than a good bun? From messy to formal, to fun – we have the ultimate style-guide for you bun lovers out there that like to style your hair, but simply just may not have the time to straighten, curl, or give it a complicated style! Keep reading to learn about all the different ways you can style your hair in a bun.

Messy Bun

This is probably the easiest and most go-to bun technique – we have all tried it at least – well, probably everyday we’re at home, but who says messy buns have to be an at-home look? To achieve the perfect messy bun that you can rock out on your errands, or even out with some friends, gather your hair into a high ponytail, then twist it to create a loose bun by wrapping the hair around itself — it should resemble a cinnamon roll. After securing in place with a hair tie and strategically placed bobby pins, pull out sections of your bun to loosen.

Low Bun

Did you know that the word “chignon” technically just means a low bun – but, the word now carries connotations of formality and vintage style, as well as being used to describe updos that aren’t buns. We think low buns are great and are often worn in formal work environments today! Just grab your hair like you’re going to tie it into a ponytail and wrap it around as you would a high bun. You can then at hair clips and other accessories like scarves to make your look chicer!

 Ballerina Bun

Get your hairspray and bobby pins out – this one’s a little tricky! Whether you grew up taking a few ballet classes or not, this hair-do is both sleek and chic! Put your hair up in a ponytail and begin twisting your lock so that you can easily wrap it around into a bun. Once you’ve done that secure it down with some bobby pins and a lot of hairspray for that slicked-back look.

Nowadays, you can also buy hair donuts to make this process a lot easier! Simply place the donut around the ponytail and let your hair flow over it covering the entire donut. Next, secure the hair with another hair-tie or elastic before you begin to wrap the loose hair around the bottom of the donut and secure it with a bobby pin. Don’t forget the hairspray, of course!

Half Bun

This is another more laid-back look, but for when you want to keep your hair down too! This look is also great if your roots are starting to look a bit oily and you’re in a rush to leave the house. Simply part the top half of your hair as if you’re going to tie it into a half-pony and create a messy bun on the top of your head with the hair that you’ve gathered. If you have a little extra time, you can even curl or straighten the hair you’ve left down to look like you’ve given your look that extra effort in the morning!

Space Buns

Last but not least, we have buns inspired by none other than the iconic Princess Lea. Space buns are super fun and easy. Part your hair like you’re going to tie them up in pigtails and simply make buns on both the right and left sides of the top of your head. There’s no rule to space buns – they can be as neat or as messy as you’d like them to be and they’re great fun!
