Food Trends Everyone will be Discussing this Decade

Every year, we have food that come on to the scene and just explode! Last year, was the year of Cauliflower everything, replacing pizza crusts, rice or quinoa base and even replaced some of our snacks. Milks, in all its kinds, specifically oat milk was also on the rise and we all have not missed the rise of the plant-based meat alternatives either.

What will be the next “thing” in 2020? We did some research and found the below 6 will most likely have their time to shine big time this decade.

Bone broth

Yes, you heard right. Bone broth is one of the latest health-conscious food trends to hit the market, and many health conscious restaurant outlets and customers are already on the bandwagon.

Throughout the decade, bone broth became known as a nutritional powerhouse with claims backed by science that it provides nutrients such as collagen, gelatin, essential minerals and amino acids. Because of its components, it has healing properties, slows down the aging process, and improves overall skin and hair. It has other advantages such as providing a boost in the immune system, strengthens bones, relieves joint pain and enhances gut health.

Intermittent fasting

It’s not exactly new, nor is it a ‘food’ for that matter, but it is a trend, and it’s here to stay. Unlike other diets that come and go, intermittent fasting has quiet the backup with even health experts promoting it themselves.

We are all quite familiar with the concept of fasting because, we personally experience it once a year, or we know someone who observes the Holy month of Ramadan. Although we are familiar with fasting, most of us are unaware of the list of health benefits it provides us with. Research proves that it can increase a person’s longevity and stress resistance and decrease in the risk of cancer and obesity.

On top of being helpful in weight loss, studies show that intermittent fasting has many other benefits including protecting against aging, reduces bloods pressure, cholesterol and can help in brain health.

2019 saw more plant-based options than ever before, especially when it came to protein sources…and that train isn’t slowing down any time soon. As people became more conscious as to what they were putting into their bodies and where and how their food was sourced, plant-based proteins showed a rise in demand and will likely continue to gain popularity this year.

Overall, consumers have been encouraged to consume less red meat and food companies are responding to this demand.

Collagen Powders

Collagen is a protein found in our bodies and is essentially the ‘glue’ that holds our body together. It is a liquid-y substance found in our hair, skin, muscles, bones and tendons and provides structure, strength and volume.

Adding collagen powders to your diet in smoothies, coffee, and tea is flaunted as the newest wellness trend to promote healthy, glowing skin…but does it actually work? Evidence shows that is does support anti-aging by improving skin elasticity and hydration- but key is consistency. Use a collagen supplement over several months to feel and see an improvement.

According to a research study by Grand View Research, projected collagen market is projected to reach $6.5 billion dollars by 2025 as collagen makes its way into more food and beauty products. That being said, collagen is here to stay and is gaining more and more popularity with time.

More Dairy Free Milk Options

2019 was heavy with oat milk, it was THE YEAR for oat milk. We also learnt that just because something is nut based, doesn’t mean that it is friendly for the environment. With so much of the population switching to a vegan or plant-based diet, the need for alternative milk is continuing to grow. As the demand grows, more companies are beginning to release their own nondairy milk alternatives. Pea milk could very much be the next big plant milk, and it has one of the lowest environmental footprints.

So what will 2020 bring?

Over the recent years, people have become more and more conscious as to what they are putting into their bodies and where those foods came from. Consumers now care whether their food has been ethically sourced and their impact on the environment. Consumer habits have also changed the direction in which those food companies are going.

So what will 2020 bring? It looks like this year continue to cater to environmentally and health conscious consumers. We may also see some new ways to consume dairy and plant-based meats. Globally, there has been a shift in the type of food people are consuming, towards healthy food and this doesn’t seem to be going anywhere in the coming years.
