Five World Restaurants with Two Michelin Stars

Regardless of how big or small the restaurant is, the level of passion and innovation incorporated into the creation of its dishes is what drives the Michelin inspectors to go and rate the restaurant.

The Michelin Guide, which we refer to today as the Michelin Red Guide, originates back in 1922. It all started when the famous French tire company, Michelin, published the oldest European hotel and restaurant reference guide. While it originally launched in 1900 as a way for motorists to have an easy reference for tire shops and mechanics, with time, the list later evolved into the repertoire of restaurants and hotels that we know today. As a result, it is now one of the most sought-after and prestigious gastronomical rankings internationally.

This guide currently awards up to three Michelin stars to few establishments based on:

  • The quality of food
  • The mastery of the flavor and cooking techniques
  • The personality of the chef in his cuisine
  • The value of money
  • The consistency between visits

What does every star mean? The criteria of the starred rankings were published in 1936:

  • One star: “a very good restaurant in its category”
  • Two stars: “Excellent cooking, worth a detour”
  • Three stars: “Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”

Following our introduction to the world of 1-star Michelin rankings in our first article of this series, today we will go to the next level and check out the restaurants that are “worth a detour”! Here are some 2 Michelin star rated restaurants around the world that are worth knowing.

Don Alfonso 1890 // Sant’Agata, Italy

I was lucky to visit this restaurant last year and I was totally impressed! The combination between the modern restaurant and the vintage hotel decorated with loca,l hand-painted ceramics gives you a feeling of immense fulfillment. The old cellar dating back to the Antiquity along with its library speaks of past centuries where time has seemingly just stopped.

Their 7-course menu was a combination of innovation and tradition which puts your senses on full alert. However, the masterpiece of the whole experience was meeting Don Alfonso in person along with his talented sous Chef Ernesto. Not only so, but we were able to take a kitchen tour with them and see the action behind the scenes firsthand!

Funky Gourmet // Athens, Greece

Located in the heart of the Greek capital, this charming restaurant is in downtown Athens. The dining room is simple and relaxed, decorated with black and white furniture already giving you a hint of the type of food fusions they make. The food is bold and innovative; they have a 3-course dinner menu where you can try some of their famous dishes like “Find the Truffle”, the “Cuttlefish Oreo” and “Silence the Lamb”.

Amador // Vienna, Austria

Amador is the place where Michelin starred Chef Amador transformed an actual wine cellar with stone-covered walls, into a comfortable and delightful place. Chef Amador’s team combine intensive flavors and high-quality ingredients to create sophisticated food that is strong on detail. They have an 8-course tasting menu which indulges your taste buds into many flavors. Noteworthy items are their scallops, black cod, and their local Vienna snails. Additionally, the presentation is intriguing in the way that the plates and cutleries are designed to complement the menu.

The Guest House // Taipei, Taiwan

The restaurant was previously a members-only dining club located inside Sheraton Grande. Although its decor is what takes your breath away as you enter, t can only be surpassed by the delicious offerings on the menu. The remarkable skills of the team transform seemingly simple dishes into tasteful presentations which further reveal great textures and taste. The menu is largely Hunan and Sichuan in origin, but with a Taiwanese twist. Signature dishes include double-steamed soups, chicken rice with sesame oil, and mille-feuilles tofu skin.

The Greenhouse // London, England

The Greenhouse is a delightful restaurant accessible through a garden entrance taking you into a nature-inspired design and continues with a pale green color theme to the dining room. The classical cuisine uses the finest ingredients from around Europe and orchestrates them into a beautiful fusion. It is well known for its 3-course lunch menu and its famous duck dish. The cooking is refined and delicate to maintain the authentic and classic vibe that they try to present in their menu.
