Work, social life, family, personal life, hobbies…it is not easy balancing everything we have on our plate – and most of us have not yet mastered a healthy way to do it all.
Our bodies always try and communicate to us when we’re hungry, sleepy, or exhausted – but sometimes we ignore the signs or just don’t know what to look for! It is important that we understand our bodies to learn how to make decisions that would benefit it in the long term.

If you are generally an easy going, happy person but have noticed your mood going through ups and downs more often than usual, and your temper is shorter, this could be due to your body being tired. If you snapped at someone out of nowhere, this could also be due to your body being drained. Check in with yourself when you feel on edge, and take a small walk around your office building, sit in the sun for a few minutes, and connect with your breath.
You’d think that if you’re exhausted, once you get to bed you’d fall asleep immediately, but that’s not exactly how it works. If your body is tired over a long period of time, it becomes too tired to sleep. If you are going through a period of elevated stress and pressure, make sure to set time aside to stretch, do yoga, breathe, and take naps so your body heals and goes back to its regular routine. Sleep is crucial to a healthy functioning body. It allows the body to heal, rejuvenate, and recover. You should be aiming to sleep between 7-9 hours nightly.
If you start to notice your lips are chapped and your skin is dry- your body is trying to signal to you that it is tired. Skin is the body’s largest organ and can tell us what is going on internally. A lack of sleep throws off your body’s hormonal balance and increases estrogen levels.
When you are stressed, your body produces cortisol in high levels which leads to water retention, making your face and body puffier because of inflammation, which will lead to breakouts. When you see your skin acting out, stop and look into why and give it what it is asking.

When your body is drained, your mind follows down the same path. Lack of concentration hinders your mental and physical performance and can make it hard to accomplish everyday tasks. It makes it hard to stay mentally alert and focus and retain information in that state so when you feel foggy, check out, take a step back, take a nap, eat a small healthy fruit, and get back on it. Getting back to your regular sleeping and eating schedule a long with rest should so it for you!

A not so fun side effect of lack of sleep can be getting sick often. This means that your immune system is weakened immune, which makes it harder for your body to fight off infections and disease. If you’ve been getting sick often without a real reason, this might be due to a lowered immunity due to excessive fatigue. If you know you are going to have a stressful period, this is where you have to take initiative and increase your vitamin intakes such a vitamin b12 and vitamin C to keep your body in tip top shape. Take a break from your commitments and workload, get a massage, spend some time on a hobby that brings you joy, try yoga, or meditate. This will boost your immune system, so you get sick less often.
