Hidden Gem: Shuweihat Island, Abu Dhabi

About a 3 hour drive from Dubai, you’ll find gorgeous Shuweihat Island in Abu Dhabi. Beautiful rock formations, multi-colored waters, and excellent star gazing all await those who visit the stunning area. Whether you mean to make it a day trip, or plan to do a little camping, this UAE spot is a fabulous choice for a quick getaway. Here’s what you need to know to make Shuweihat Island your next great escape.

Getting There

The serene landscapes of Shuweihat Island aren’t very difficult to get to. You’ll need a car, but you don’t need a 4-wheel drive, or any sort of rugged terrain vehicle to access its rocky shores. Do be aware that the road to the island is rather heavily laden with large truck traffic. You’ll also want to make sure that you have plenty of gas before starting out. Petrol stations aren’t exactly found in abundance along the way. Your last chance for fuel will be in Ruwais. There’s also a mall there, isn’t that just kismet?

Plan Ahead

Shuweihat has gained some popularity recently, but is still relatively light on crowds. To access the beach, unless you have an SUV, expect a bit of a walk, but certainly nothing too taxing. Comfy shoes will be your friend. If you can, arrive early to mid-day. The drive is not one that you’ll particularly want to undertake at night as some of the roads can be a bit confusing. If you plan to spend the day, or night, you’ll have to bring your own food. The island does not have anything in the way of amenities. So, that means no food and no restrooms. Consider packing a picnic, or you can always stop in Ruwais for food and facilities.

To Camp Or Not To Camp

Camping on Shuweihat island does happen often, even though it is technically not a legal camping spot. Parts of the island do host the UAE military. You’ll want to keep an eye out for signs forbidding entry, as well as those denying you the use of cameras or video recording. However, as long as you avoid the clearly marked prohibited areas, camping overnight is generally not a problem. Just make sure to keep the volume of your group low, and to pick up after yourselves when it’s time to head home. Those who stay overnight are treated to some truly spectacular celestial sights.

Splash, Explore, And Don’t Forget The Camera

Have we mentioned yet how gorgeous this place is? Whether you’re a total photo pro, or just want a few good pics for the ‘Gram, you’ll find no shortage of epic beauty here. The rock formations are gorgeous, with multi-colored hues and secret coves to discover. As for the water, yeah, it’s a total 10. The water is also very shallow, meaning you can walk out quite far with it only coming up to your knees.
