If you’re lucky enough to visit the gorgeous city that is San Sebastian, Spain, you may never want to return. Travel usually means losing just a little bit of your heart to the destinations you visit, but broadening your horizons at the same time. This place just may take a little more of it than usual. San Sebastian has something for every type of traveler. There’s history, art, beaches, and a thriving foodie scene. Though it may not be quite the “hidden” gem it once was, it is still an absolutely killer place to spend some time. Here are our picks for what you won’t want to pass up on your stay.
The beach always seems like a good place to start. This one receives top marks, and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe. The waters are a gorgeous shade of turquoise and quite calm, making for excellent swimming. After you soak up some some sun and put a little salt in your hair, you’ll definitely want to check out the La Concha Promenade. To walk the entire length will take you around half an hour. That is, if you don’t get too hung up admiring the charming elegance of the promenade itself, or get lured into any of the tempting eateries along the way.
Foodies will be delighted to hear that San Sebastian boasts that it contains more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city on the planet. It’s also famous for its pintxos bars. So what is “pintxos”? Well, it’s basically the equivalent of tapas. There are tons of pintxos places in the city, especially in the Old Town portion. Hitting up some of these spots is a great way to sample some truly out of this world food, without putting a huge dent in your budget. You can even take guided tours that will take you to some of the very best of these types of eateries.

With so much to offer, this area is popular both with tourists and locals, especially at night. It’s also a central hub, with close proximity to other places of interest like the Pescaderia (Fish Market), the Plaza de la Constitucion, and a gorgeous Neo-classical library.

As gorgeous as San Sebastian is from ground level, the view from a bit higher up can really take your breath away. To get a bird’s eye view, you’ve got two options. You can hike to the top of Mount Urgull, or you can ride a cable car to the tippy-top of Mount Igueldo if you’re feeling a tad lazy. If you go with the view from Igueldo, there’s also an added bonus. The mountain’s summit hosts an amusement park!
