Eyebrow Trends: 1920s-2010s

Brows can certainly change up your whole look and we will guarantee that with this list of brow trends from the past century! From thin to arched to curved and to natural – your brows definitely make a statement in the look you’re going for. We can’t believe some of these brow trends ever even existed, but they sure did – whereas, some of them, we kind of wish would make a comeback! Which brow style is your favorite?

The 1920s

The 1920s eyebrow trend certainly paid great tribute to silent, black and white films with their thin and rounded arches. These brows definitely made a statement and were in-style to copy actresses’ iconic saddened looks.

The 1930s

A decade later, the shape of the brow trend remained the same, although, they became slightly bolder through filling and dying. Some even began completely shaving their brow hairs off and drawing them onto their faces to give them a bolder and more emphasized look.

The 1940s

The ’40s marked the beginning of fuller, more natural-looking shapes. Women completely ditched the thin brow trend from the past two decades and began letting their natural lashes grow and form a natural arch.

The 1950s

For the second decade in a row, the thickness of the brow remains, except this time around we are emphasizing the arch! We can see this brow trend be worn by many celebrities in the 50s, including the iconic Marilyn Monroe.

The 1960s

In the 1960s, false eyelashes became the centerpiece of makeup. During this era, eye makeup that gave women big doll-like eyes was very common – which meant, of course, taking the focus away from the brows. Brows returned to their slim style from the early 1900s, although, also became shorter in length.

The 1970s

It wasn’t long till brows went back to being ultra-thin after the 60s thanks to the 70s’ vibrant makeup looks. Beauty was more focused on the eyes and lips rather than other facial features, especially with the flamboyant eyeshadow trends of the 70s.

The 1980s

Wait a minute! Thick and natural brows are back. The ’80s saw a spike in full, au naturel brows thanks to beauty icons like Brooke Shields as she rose to fame in the decade. This brow trend was unplucked and all-natural allowing the hairs to gently frame the eyes with a more subtle nude look.

On the other hand, in the 90s, plucked brows were a major trend. As beauty standards changed once again, many women began plucking their brows but not filling them in, and instead, having a very clean yet natural look, allowing more space for focus towards eye shape.

The 2000s

In the 2000s, a whole new century – brows got thinner and thinner playing on the grunge look with the rise of punk rock music and fashion statements. This brow trend was worn by almost every celebrity and was pencil-thin like they had taken a needle and drawn them on!

The 2010s

The Insta-brow. With the rise of social media and the internet excelling and innovating, makeup artists and gurus took their art to the platform and became more and more creative with their looks. With the obsession of emphasizing every facial feature from lashes to bone structure, and, of course, brows – they became bolder than ever and definitely changed the brow game!
