The Art of makeup – though it can be beautiful, it also comes with a lot of mess. Cleaning your makeup brushes is vital, yet so many of us neglect the task. Even the best makeup can become streaky and patchy when applied with a dirty brush, whereas, clean bristles will assure a smoother application. If that hasn’t convinced you enough, dirty makeup brushes can cause you to transmit bacteria to your face, accumulate dead skin cells and oil, which can clog your pores and lead to dull or broken out skin. So, here’s how to clean them.
Hand wash the brushes with an anti-bacterial soap or silicone-free baby shampoo in lukewarm water. Do not use hand soap for this step, otherwise, oils and scents from the hand soap can stick to the bristles and make it more difficult to clean out the dirt and bacteria.
Use this technique instead of pouring cleanser directly onto the brushes to make the next step of the cleaning process easier.
Swirling your brush to clean out the left-over powders and foundation from your brushes is a more efficient technique as you are separating and getting between the bristles of the brush rather than cleaning just the outer layer. Keep swirling until you see the product coming off onto your hand.
Once you’ve finished getting all of the product out of the brush, re-rinse the bristles thoroughly with lukewarm water once again to get any excess product out along with the cleanser used to clean the brushes.
Just to make sure all of the excess product and moisture is removed from the bristles of the brush, squeeze them with a clean towel repeatedly. If moisture remains in the bristles, it can just cause more bacteria to build up and the purpose of cleaning them was pointless!
To dry the brushes, all you have to do is leave them out with the heads of the brushes hanging over a countertop so that they don’t pick up more dirt or bacteria.
