Have A Blast in Bologna, Italy

Bologna is the 7th largest city in Italy, and the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in the northern part of the country. With its location between the major tourist pulls of Florence, Venice, and Milan, Bologna is a great place to spend a day or two while city jumping. Foodies, culture vultures, and art lovers will absolutely fall head over heels for Bologna. The city does have somewhat of a “college town” feel. Which makes perfect sense, considering it is home to the oldest university in Europe. Here are some of the must-see spots and things to do in Bologna.

Climb the Towers For A Great View

Pisa isn’t the only place in Italy where you can visit a leaning tower. Bologna was actually home to over 200 towering towers at one point. Today, around 25 still remain. Out of the still remaining structures, the two most famous, and tallest, are the Torri delgi Asinelli and Torri Garisenda. The two towers are located right beside one another. Garisenda is the smaller of the two, and has assumed a very noticeable lean. It’s about half the size of its neighbor, the Asinelli. Asinelli soars over 92 meters into the air, and once served as a prison and a stronghold. You can also climb it. If you’re up for climbing the nearly 500 steps to the top, you’ll be rewarded with some incredible views.

Linger at Piazza Maggiore

Like many Italian cities, Bologna has a massive piazza that functions as the heart of the city. Piazza Maggiore is a great place to grab a morning coffee and people watch. Make sure to enjoy the views of the gorgeous medieval buildings that surround it. This is also where you’ll find the gorgeous Fountain of Neptune. It dates back to the 16th century, and has been considered so lovely that many European cities have copied it.

Stroll Under The Porticoes

Bologna is home to a truly staggering amount of porticoes. In fact, there are over 40km of them. It makes for a pleasant experience when walking about the city. Not only are they beautiful, but they also help keep rain and sun off you. Some of the porticoes have been standing for over 1000 years. The arches and columns add so much character to the city. Make sure to look up, the tops of some of the porticoes are stunningly decorated. Not to be missed are the Bonaccorsi Arch, and the walkway that leads to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca.

Find the Hidden Canals

At one time, Bologna had an extensive canal system running through it. It was an important part of trade and industry. However, most of the canals have since been covered and built over. But, if you head north of the Two Towers, you can still catch a peek of some of the few that still remain.

Go on a Food Tour-Seriously

Bologna is rife with amazing restaurants, incredible food markets, and food stalls that offer scrumptious food. Bologna is regularly described as a foodie’s absolute dream. There are many food tours offered in the city, and you should definitely take one. One of the highlights of many food tours is stopping by to watch fresh pasta being made.
