Hidden Gem Travel: The Albanian Riviera

It’s probably safe to say that we could all use a good beach vacation right about now. But, even if we weren’t globally experiencing a touch of cabin fever atm, the Albanian Riviera would still have massive appeal. For one, there are gorgeous beaches galore. Seriously, these things look like postcard fodder. There’s also castles, UNESCO sites, nightlife, history, and charming hamlets. Oh, and it will also cost you a fraction of the price of a similar vacation is other parts of Europe like Italy or Greece. So, while you figure out when you can pencil in a trip, peep these must-see spots along the gorgeous Albanian Riviera.

We’d Rather Be At The Beach

The Albanian Riviera has an absolutely absurd amount of gorgeous beaches to visit. The waters of the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean are fabled for their clear, azure beauty and vibrant sea-life. All these beautiful beaches mean you definitely have plenty to choose from. If you like your beaches with amenities and nearby eateries, you’ll want to check out Borsh Beach or Dhermi Beach.

For those who want a more secluded feel, seek out Drymades, Gjipe, or Jale Beaches. Or, if you want the best of both worlds, Ksamil is likely calling your name. It offers a bit of beach close to civilization, but intrepid explorers can often find more solitary inlets. There’s also three islands that you can swim or boat to nearby.

Scenic Towns and Hamlets

Is there anything more charming than a sleepy coastal town? A place where the pace of life seems just a bit more relaxed, and you can almost taste the salt on the air as you walk the cobblestone streets. There’s the picturesque village of Vuno, for example, with its Greek-like homes and buildings tucked into the rolling hills. There’s also Himara, surrounded by beautiful beaches and home to a splendid seaside promenade. Here you’ll find many tempting restaurants and plenty of night life to keep you entertained. Also not to be missed is Qeparo, with its Venetian style castle, Ali Pasha Castle. Oh yeah, and more of those breathtaking beaches nearby.

Ancient History

History buffs will find quite a few spots in the Albanian Riviera they will want to stop by. Make time to see Butrint Archaeological Site and National Park. The park is host to many amazing species of flora and fauna, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The ancient town of Butrint is actually located inside the park. The Romans took over the city in 228 BC, and the ruins of a Roman theater still remain. There’s also the ruins of aqueducts, temples, The Lions Gate, the Forum, Dionysus Altar, and more to explore. If you need even more history, hit up the town of Gjirokaster and tour the fortress. The city itself dates all the way back to Bronze and Iron ages.
