What To See In At-Turaif, KSA

If you’re a history buff, you really need to consider getting that booty out to At-Turaif, KSA. Saudi Arabia is an ancient land at its heart, and currently, there are 5 UNESCO World Heritage sites located there that prove that. So what makes At-Turaif so special? Well, it was the seat of power in the KSA for a long time. In fact, the At-Turaif District was the first historical center in the whole of the Arabian Peninsula that featured a unifying power. Serving as the home of the Saudi royal family is definitely something to brag about. So, what can you expect to see on a visit? Here’s a few of the highlights.

Stop By At-Turaif’s Visitors’ Center

It’s always a good idea to stop by the visitor center when visiting a place for the first time. As At-Turaif is a site that comprises various points of interest, the center helps give a general overview of what’s available to experience. There are museums, mosques, galleries, palaces, and other sites that you’ll want to see.

Speaking Of Palaces

Not to be missed is Salwa Palace. It dates back to the early 1700’s, and is the largest structure of At-Turaif. The impressive piece of history covers an area of about 5000 square meters. Its hallowed halls served as home for the first three Saudi rulers. The palace is a gorgeous example of Najdi architecture, with walls made of clay, mud bricks, and straw, featuring large, lovely, decorative triangular windows. The windows were meant to both invite in natural light, and to keep that hot desert air circulating. The tour guides here are insanely knowledgeable, training for months in all things Salwa Palace, so don’t be shy about asking questions.

Not Just Palaces And Walls

While soaking up all the history, you’ll want to make sure you hit up the other area points of interest. There’s the Social Life Museum, the Imam Mohammed bin Saud Mosque, and Arabian Horse Museum, and a Trade and Monetary Museum. Also, keep an eye out for the traditional markets that sell authentic souvenirs and crafts. At Turaif is undergoing a massive effort to blend the old with the new. The idea is to eventually have it feeling like an outdoor museum where two time periods collide. Movers and shakers also want to add luxury hotel options, as well as select retailers and eateries. This will definitely be a spot to keep your eye on over the coming years.
