Makeup Expiration Date Guide

So, does anyone else have that tube of makeup laying around that is so old almost all the writing has worn off it? It’s been around for so long, and you only bring it out on those extra special occasions when your makeup needs to be flawless. But you can’t seem to part with it. Because it’s the best. Maybe it’s a discontinued color you can’t quite seem to find anymore. Or, a rather pricey item that you just don’t want to spend the cash on again anytime soon. Yeah, us too. However, precious item aside, makeup does generally have an expiration date. You should try to stick to those dates. Curious? Read on to see how long you can safely keep and use different types of makeup.

Foundation

Foundation’s makeup expiration date is 6 months to a year. Some may be thinking, “if only I had to buy it only that often!”. But, if you have some older bottles or tubes lying around, there’s a pretty foolproof way to telling if it’s gone bad. It will separate. You’ll start to notice the oil rising to the top. It may also become clumpy. If you use foundation past the above time frame, you risk breakouts, clogged pores, and even bacteria.

Lipsticks, Glosses, Creams, Liners, Etc

Overall, lipsticks and the like have a makeup expiration date of a year. They survive best if you keep them in a cool, dark place. You’ll know they’ve taken a turn for the worse if they start to get a strange texture to them. You might notice fine, almost sandy, grain-like anomalies. That means it’s time to toss it. Also be aware that if you have a cold sore and use a lip product, you need to toss the whole thing. Applying it again after the outbreak has passed can leave you open to getting another sore.

Mascara

This makeup expiration date is a short one! Mascara only lasts about three months before you start risking some issues. Eye infections and the like can come into play if you use it beyond that point. If the mascara is unopened, it can last up to 2 years. Here you’ll be looking for a funky smell to let you know it’s time to ditch your current tube. Also, if you notice your mascara is flaking and just not lasting you through the day as it once did, it needs to go in the garbage.

Eyeliner

Eyeliner has a similar makeup expiration date as mascara. In its liquid form, it stays “fresh” for 3 to 4 months. Gel liners last two months. But, kohl liner can last up to a year. Eyeliner pencils are the safest to use because they’re constantly being sharpened. That helps get rid of the bacteria that can sometimes gather on liquid and gel liners. To protect yourself from infection and irritation of the eye, never share eyeliner. Or mascara.

Eye Shadow

Eye Shadow has a bit of a longer makeup expiration date than other eye-related beauty products. It can still be safe to use at the 6-month mark. As long as they’re the powder versions, that is. If you use creams or other eyelid tinting products, toss ’em after 3 months.

Blush

Blush is one of those makeups that can vary when it comes to the expiration date. If it’s a powder, you’re good to go for up to two full years. However, if you use a stick or a cream, it’s still one of the longest-lasting products you will buy. They are good for 12 to 18 months.
