Parisian Bakeries to Try

Parisians love their bread. As a city that is known in part for its fabulous food, Paris has elevated the culinary game in many gastric arenas. Bakeries are an important part of day to day life for locals. Many people stop by their local bread shop, called a boulangerie, every day. That’s because bread is typically served with every meal of the day. There are over 30,000 bakeries in Paris. The French consume roughly 320 baguettes every second. That’s more than 10 billion of the long, thin, crusty loaves of bread consumed each year. With that many bakeries, it can be difficult to know where to start your quest in Paris for the best of the best. Check out our list of amazing Parisian bakeries and add one to your itinerary for your next trip to the “City of Light”.

Boulangerie Utopie

Even in a sea of over 30,000 Parisian bakeries, this one manages to stand out. It is the brainchild of two friends who share a passion for food and travel. It just so happens that one is a pastry chef, and the other a baker. People literally line up around the block to get their hands on the goods this bakery produces. It also was named best boulangerie in Paris in 2016. Though you’ll find plenty of traditional Parisian baked goods on offer here, the owners’ love for travel is evident in the flavors they create.

It’s not unusual for the creative duo to meld flavors from other cuisines into their wares. For example, you’ll find flavors like paprika, curry, and sesame in some of their bakes. Also of note, is this place offers “pastry of the weekend” and “bread of the week” selections. It’s always good to try new things.

Du Paine Et Des Idees

This delightful bakery is helmed by baker Christophe Vasseur. His skill is evident in every bite of what you’ll find here. He even was elected best baker of Paris in 2008. The bakery itself dates back to 1875, and is almost as beautiful to look at as the breads it sells. The painted ceilings are especially breathtaking. You’ll find precious little here in the way of sweets and pastries. At Du Pain Et Des Idees, it’s all about the bread. However, locals rave about about the chocolate pistachio pinwheels. Expect lines, as this place is a local favorite.
