Best Places To Bird Watch in the UAE

There’s few things that feel as good for the soul as getting out in nature. For those who love bird watching, or even those who just enjoy time in the great outdoors, the UAE offers some prime spots to indulge. When it come to birds, over 442 different species have been recorded as being sighted in the UAE over the last quarter century or so. However, about 100 of those are considered vagrants. That means, the UAE is just a stop over before the birds are off to different climes. Typically, for migratory birds, the UAE is an important rest area between Africa and Asia. For serious bird enthusiasts, the region can be a mecca for spotting rare species. Several birding tours are offered out of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. But for people who like to bird watch more casually, we’ve found a few must visit spots.

Al Mamzar Park and Ra’s al-Khor Wildlife Reserve

Winter isn’t too far away. With winter comes migration time for a lot of different bird species. Many will make a pit stop in Dubai’s various parks. Both Safa Park and Dubai Creek Park often play host to many feathered part time visitors. But those on a mission to bird watch should definitely hit up Al Mazmar Park and/or Ra’s al-Khor Wildlife Reserve. From now until early November, Al Mazmar becomes a veritable hot spot for vagrant birds. Plus, there’s also the beach as an added bonus. The Reserve does offer a more year round chance for good birding. Flamingos, anyone? But, for this time of year, keep an eye out for the Greater Spotted Eagle. It favors the lands in the reserve from now until April.
