Amazing Animal Encounter Destinations

Travel offers us a world of sights, experiences, and cultures to explore. We’ve all got cities, beaches, museums, landmarks, and world wonders we are hungry to see. But for animal lovers, travel can also offer once in a lifetime encounters with the animals of the globe. Seeing creatures in their natural habitats can be a life-changing experience. Here are some of the best destinations to consider if you’re looking for an animal encounter you’ll never forget.

The Galapagos Islands

If it was good enough for Darwin, it’s good enough for you. This has got to be the number one place on the planet for an unforgettable animal encounter. The Galapagos Islands are located off the coast of Ecuador. The wildlife that calls these islands home is fascinating and diverse. There’s sea lions, giant tortoises, marine iguanas, penguins, birds, and so much more. There are some species of animals found there that can’t be found anywhere else on earth. There are several award winning expeditions that will help you explore the islands, while ensuring the safety of the local creatures. Could you really pass up the chance to see a bird called a Blue-footed Booby in its natural environs?

India

Unfortunately, humans have a particular knack for screwing things up. Tigers are now counted as one of the world’s most endangered animals, thanks to people. India is doing its part to protect these majestic cats, by declaring them a protected species. In fact, the country hosts a large percentage of their remaining numbers. Some reports put that percentage as high as 75%. Some National Parks do offer photo safaris, where your chances to spot a tiger in the wild are just about as high as they can get. That’s not to say you’re guaranteed an encounter, but it would definitely be worth a shot. Plus, the money you give goes right back to helping tiger conservation.

Japan

Wanna chill out with a bunch of monkeys? Well then Japan is your stop for this type of animal encounter. Snow monkeys, actually called Japanese Macaques, love the hot springs found in Kyoto, Japan. We can’t really blame them, either. You can catch the monkeys swimming, bathing, and just having a grand ol’ time in the pools of warm water. While you can get pretty close to the action, the monkeys are pretty indifferent towards the human onlookers. These adorable monkeys sure know how to put on a show.

Costa Rica

For a spectacular animal encounter filled adventure, Costa Rica is hard to beat. It’s known as one of the most bio-diverse countries on earth. There are countless wildlife treks you can take here and parks to visit. Corcovado National Park covers over 263 km of coast, rainforest, and jungle on its own. The Park is part of the Osa Peninsula, and is home to an overwhelming amount of animals. Here you’ll encounter sloths, jaguars, birds, monkeys, crocodiles and more. Hit the water, and whales, dolphins, turtles, and whale sharks await, among countless other species. Though Corcovado may be a bit hard to reach, it is worth the effort. But, if you’re looking for something more easily accessible, the small country of Costa Rica offers no shortage of opportunities to view the local wildlife.
